Introduction
Halloween Inspired Dog Names in Pop Culture
Halloween inspired dog names are prevalent in pop culture. Ghost and Fang are two examples of famous dogs whose names both fit into the Halloween theme. Ghost, the famous albino direwolf from the hit series Game of Thrones, is the canine companion of Jon Snow. Ghost and John share a special bond where Jon is able to warg into Ghost while he sleeps, allowing him to walk in the direwolf's skin and hunt and run free. Another famous dog with a Halloween inspired name is Fang. Fang is an oversized boarhound of Rubeus Hagrid in the Harry Potter series. In the novel series, Fang is portrayed as a Great Dane, but in the movies, he is a great English Mastiff.
Several of dogs in pop culture fit into the Halloween inspired theme but none so well as Zero. Zero is the ghost hound of Jack in Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas. Halloween and spooky styled themes are a particular favorite of the writer. In the 1993 animated film, Jack Skellington is king of Halloween Town, which is a particularly spooky place. However, Jack soon discovers Christmas Town and desires to bring the holiday to Halloween Town. In the film, Jack is accompanied by Zero, a ghost hound. Jack is out walking Zero one night when he discovered the doors to all the holiday towns. Christmas Town attracts his attention, and that is how he and Zero hear of Christmas. Zero, because he is a ghost, is a flying dog. He also has a glowing orange jack-o-lantern nose that lights up. Zero's nose is a reference to Ruldolph's, which becomes obvious later in the film when Zero helps guide Jack through the fog as he delivers Christmas presents.
Spooky dogs are a favorite of writer Tim Burton. In the 2012 Tim Burton movie, Frankenweenie, a little boy's dog suddenly dies. Heartbroken, the boy performs a science project on his dog to resurrect him, just like Doctor Frankenstein did with his Monster. Sparky, like Zero, is not quite alive but is animated and captures the hearts of viewers with his loyalty, trust, and love for his master. Zero, though ethereal, also embodies all that a good is, loyal, trusting, and an excellent companion to Jack.
