Introduction
When it comes to Indian dog breeds, perhaps the most common and most popular is the Indian Spitz. The breed belongs to the Utility Dog group and has a resemblance to the German Spitz. The Indian Spitz was first introduced by the British to India when they bred the dogs from the German Spitz. Years of experimentation to create a breed that can withstand India’s climate and can manage the plains of the country led to the current Indian Spitz dog. Due to strict import rules in the country, the Indian Spitz rose to popularity during the 1980s and 1990s. To date, they still remain a usual pet dog and companion in most Indian households.
Indian Spitz Dog Names in Pop Culture
In terms of pop culture, the Indian Spitz is not in the same league as some of the more renowned dog breeds to be featured in different works. However, they are quite important in their local country’s pop culture, particularly in the film industry. Bollywood, India’s own version of Hollywood based in Mumbai, is a massive part of pop culture, not just in India but also worldwide. In fact, Bollywood is the biggest film industry in the entire world when it comes to production of films, with the entertainment industry is a major player in the country’s economy.
The Indian Spitz can often be seen in Bollywood films where dogs are involved, although most are in minor roles or in the background. For instance, in the 2011 Bollywood film Chillar Party, one of the main character’s dogs is an Indian Spitz named Bhidu. The film’s story is about a group of kids who are trying to fight against the termination of stray dogs in their society. Bhidu was central to the role as he was the one that started the kids’ appreciation of dogs.
A more notable role involving an Indian Spitz was in the 1994 Bollywood film classic Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!, or simply HAHK. The film’s title translates to “I Am Yours” in English. The plot of the story revolves around Prem and Nisha. Prem and his older brother, Rajesh, are orphans who live with their uncle Kailashnath. Meanwhile, Nisha and her older sister, Pooja, are the daughters of an esteemed professor. Rajesh and Pooja were arranged to be married by Rajesh’s uncle and Pooja’s parents, who happen to be old friends who come across each other after many years. After the family gets together, Prem and Nisha meet and develop a budding friendship.
Rajesh and Pooja’s marriage leads to a pregnancy, which delights everyone. At the same time, Prem and Nisha start to develop feelings for each other, although they keep this a secret. Pooja, however, finds out that Nisha is in love with Prem. She gives Nisha a necklace and makes her promise that someday, the two will marry each other. Shortly after, Pooja dies after falling down a flight of stairs.
Nisha assumes Pooja’s role as mother, which leads her parents to arrange a marriage between Rajesh and Nisha. Thinking that the arranged marriage will be between her and Prem, Nisha agrees. It was not until the pre-nuptial ceremony when she discovers that she will actually marry Rajesh. Not wanting to disappoint their families, Prem and Nisha agree to give each other up.
It is just before the wedding when Tuffy, Prem’s dog, makes an appearance and plays a short but important role in the film. Before marrying Rajesh, Nisha asks Tuffy to send a letter to Prem, along with the necklace from Pooja. However, Tuffy mistakenly gives the letter to Rajesh. Understanding that the two are in love, Rajesh cancels the wedding and gives Nisha up so that she can marry Prem.
Indian Spitz Dog Name Considerations
Naming a dog is one of the first things that a dog owner has to do after getting a new puppy. Although this task seems easy at first, once you start thinking, you realize that there is an overwhelming amount of name options to choose from. As a general rule, it is usually recommended that the names given to dogs are only one or two syllables in length. This is to help the dog easily recall and understand their newly given name.
For Indian Spitz dog breeds, one consideration to be made is the country of origin. As the name suggests, this breed was originally developed in India and remains to be the country’s most popular dog breed. Therefore, you may find it suitable to give your dog an Indian name that has a nice meaning to it. You may also choose anything relating to India and its wonderful culture.
When brainstorming for a name, you can also take the qualities of the Indian Spitz into account. Physically, the Indian Spitz is medium-sized and comes in solid coat colors of either white, brown or black. They are also known for being active and intelligent. In fact, they are considered as one of the smartest dog breeds in the world due to how easy they learn tricks and understand humans. Any of these qualities are a good source of inspiration for a name.
