Introduction
The Irish Water Spaniel is the tallest spaniel that is recognized by the American Kennel Club. This breed has a liver colored coat that is waterproof and curly. Their tail tapers and is sometimes referred to as a rat tail. The Irish Water Spaniel is brave, hardworking, and playful. They are inquisitive and love to swim making them excellent in the field. If you are looking for a silly, affectionate companion, the Irish Water Spaniel is a breed to consider. They are not overly popular within the United States so you may have to travel to find your new Irish Water Spaniel puppy.
Irish Water Spaniel Dog Names In Pop Culture
The first Westminster Kennel Club dog show was held in 1877
and there were four Irish Water Spaniels entered. The breed has been represented
at Westminster since the beginning, and in 1979, Dugan or better remembered as
Champion Oak Tree’s Irishtocrat, won it all and was crowned Best In Show. Dugan
has been the only Irish Water Spaniel to win that elusive title. Lazarus, or
Champion Tara’s Water Turned To Wine, is a miracle puppy turned champion turned
Westminster contender. His breeders, Tara Darling-Lyon and Mindy Garbarino like
to reminisce about Lazarus’ birth and how he came to earn his name. Lazarus is
from a litter of 11, but one of the puppies was stillborn. With 10 crying,
wiggling puppies, his mom was nervous about caring for such a large litter.
Being her first litter, the mom was not really prepared for motherhood and she accidentally
rolled onto Lazarus, smothering him. Darling-Lyon found an unresponsive Lazarus
and immediately began giving him CPR and mouth to nose resuscitation. She also
kept rubbing him, stimulating him. Garbarino administered a small drop of
dopamine on his tongue to help bring him back. They worked on him for about 15
minutes before they felt he was beginning to stabilize. Once they were certain
that he would recover from his near death experience, Garbarino decided to name
the miracle puppy Lazarus but Darling-Lyon wanted to name him Phoenix. Garbarino
won the debate and since then he has grown to be the biggest of his littermates
and became one of the top ten Irish Water Spaniels. Lazarus went on to be
invited to the 2007 Westminster Kennel Club’s annual dog show held at Madison
Square Garden in New York City. While Lazarus did not advance beyond the breed
competition, he is a winner to his breeders simply because he overcame such long
odds to even be invited to the greatest show of the year.
Another Tara Kennels Irish Water Spaniel made headlines when he became the
number one Irish Water Spaniel in 2017, guaranteeing him an invitation to the
2018 Westminster Kennel Club dog show. George, or Reserve Best in Specialty
Show Grand Champion in Bronze Tara’s Utter Chaos, Rally Novice, is an IWSCA
National Select winner for 2016 and 2018. He also won Best of Winners at the
Irish Water Spaniel Club of America’s (IWSCA) National Specialty in 2015.
George is still competing in the conformation ring and has over 20 Sporting
Group placements and wins as well as a Reserve Best in Show.
Irish Water Spaniel Dog Name Considerations
When you decide to bring home an Irish Water Spaniel, be prepared to bring home an energetic, fun-loving puppy that loves to be silly and play games. The Irish Water Spaniel does best in a family that is energetic and active. Training will be essential to keep your new puppy from becoming the ruler of the household. Since the Irish Water Spaniel can be somewhat of a class clown, you do not want to pick their name until you have actually met them and brought them home. Many times, their name will come to you once you spend time with them and learn about their personality. Being an Irish breed, start your search with some traditional Irish names. Make a list of names that you like and then start crossing off names that sound too similar to other dogs in your family or neighborhood. Confusion will reign at the dog park if your dog’s name is too similar to other dog’s that regularly visit. You will also want to choose a name that does not sound like a command you will be using in their training. There are several traditional Irish names that would be ideal for your Irish Water Spaniel such as Cullen, Fergus, Sloane, or Moira.
