Introduction
Most people will have no idea that the Kai Ken is a breed of dog much less what one looks like. The Kai Ken is only one of six breeds native to Japan and was used to hunt an array of game within the mountains. They are even a rare breed within Japan, and there are several breeders now working together to preserve this breed. The Kai Ken is an intelligent dog and is a fast learner. They are also very devoted to their family. An athletic dog with a high prey drive, the Kai Ken is not the right dog for every family. These dogs are excellent swimmers and climbers and need a lot of exercise to keep them content.
Kai Ken Dog Names in Pop Culture
With the Kai Ken being such a rarity throughout the world, some people have a passion for preserving the breed. Yambushi Kensha located in the United States is one such breeder working on the preservation of the Kai Ken. They have imported several Kai Kens into the United States. One exceptional male Kai Ken that was imported in from Japan is Akashi, who is Aigokai (KKA) registered making him a part of the Japanese Kai Ken Preservation Society. When visiting Japan, Yambushi Kensha’s founders were searching for a mellow male with the appropriate health testing completed. They met with Tenro Kensha, another breeder of Kai Ken, and met Akashi. They then met his mother, Sakura, who also had a calm and approachable demeanor. Even though both Akashi and his mother were malleable, loving dogs, they were still considered to be top working prospects because of their impressive work ethic and high prey drive. Sakura is used as a hunter in Japan and can take down a fully mature Japanese deer. Akashi’s father, Wakahonin, has produced several Kai Ken that have been used in search and rescue as well as pest control throughout Japan. When you think of pest control though, it is not the same as in the United States; pests in Japan include the monkey, raccoon, and bear not just small vermin.
Akashi is a larger Kai Ken and to properly preserve the breed to its original standard, he will be bred to smaller females in hopes that the size of the breed remains true. Yambushi Kensha is hopeful that Akashi’s temperament will pass on to future generations of Kai Ken and people begin to learn more about this interesting breed. The Kai Ken has been accepted into the American Kennel Club’s Foundation Stock Service (AKC FSS) however, because of the low numbers of Kai Ken within the United States, it does not look like they will achieve full AKC recognition any time soon.
Yambushi Kensha has currently suspended their breeding program of Kai Ken but does still work diligently with other breeders within North America on promoting the breed and evaluating breeding prospects. Their goals are to improve the genetic diversity and bloodlines within the United States and stay true to the breed standard that has been preserved by the Kai Ken Aigokai. Even though they have suspended their breeding program, they are still willing to educate the general public on this rare breed and help those who are interested in continuing to preserve the breed and make it prosper once again.
Kai Ken Dog Name Considerations
Deciding to add a Kai Ken will be the easy part. Finding a Kai Ken puppy or even an adult for your family will be the hard part. This is a rare breed, even in their native Japan, and therefore, you will not be able to just go pick up a puppy at a local breeder’s home or find one in an animal shelter. Chances are you will need to be on a waiting list for a puppy and will have to either travel to pick up your puppy or have one shipped to you. It will probably be a long process, but once you have your new Kai Ken puppy the wait will be worth it. After bringing home your new puppy, it will be time to pick out the perfect name for your new companion. Being a rare breed from Japan, it might be an obvious choice to search for a Japanese name that will suit your new bundle of joy. Japanese names can be difficult to pronounce, but they can also be interesting and unique to the neighborhood. You will most likely not hear many dogs named Akashi, Itsuki, or Hoshiko at the dog park! Take the time to get to know your new Kai Ken before deciding on their name, many times their personality will help you find the right name.
