Introduction
If you love the fantasy genre and have recently acquired a new pup then you may find inspiration from the Lord of the Rings trilogy. J. R.R. Tolkien released the first Lord of the Rings novel in 1954, along with the second book ,and then the final instalment was released a year later. These epic fantasy novels were turned into a trilogy of movies with the first movie being released in 2001, the second in 2002, and the third in 2003. The novels proved very popular and you can’t help but find yourself drawn into the fantasy world. If you’re a fan, then why not name your dog in the spirit of this epic fantasy?
Lord of the Rings Dog Names in Pop Culture
John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was an English scholar
and Oxford University Professor specializing in Anglo-Saxon English. He wrote
many stories but most famously The Hobbit (1937) and Lord of the
Rings (1954-1955) that are loved by millions of readers. There are a lot of heroes in the Lord of the Rings
movies, including Aragorn, Sam, Frodo, Gimli and Legolas. Frodo is our
spotlight name because this character plays a huge role in the movies and as
the ring bearer and ring destroyer, he is the main character. Frodo is small and a little naive in the beginning,
however, it doesn’t take long for him to become brave and fearless. Carrying the ring means carrying a great
burden.
A Standard Schnauzer named Frodo, was successful in
the Old Dominion Kennel Club dog show, in 2013.
He won best senior puppy and best in sweepstakes. His success did not stop there either. At his first indoor show in 2014, sources
suggested that a friendly Frodo wanted to meet every dog and every person. This certainly fits in well with the
temperament traits suggested of the Standard Schnauzer Breed by the American
Kennel Club, who say that the breed is known to be social and affectionate. Despite
all the distractions, Frodo showed well and this shows that he is made to be a
show dog. Frodo’s success continued further,
and last year, Frodo won Best of Breed at the 2017 Warrenton KC and Old Dominion
Dog Show in Millwood, VA. He was voted
#5 in the National Rankings of 2017, also.
This smart and obedient pooch certainly suits the show-dog lifestyle!
The Lord of the Rings trilogy became a popular movie
in the early 21st century. The world in and around Middle-Earth draws you in and
that’s it, you’re hooked. It is full of action and epic battles, as well
as many mythical and magical creatures like orcs, wizards, ghostly spirits,
elves, dwarves, hobbit, and trolls. The movies won many academy awards,
including best make up and best cinematography.
Celebrity Sam Heughan from Outlander confirmed that
he was named by his parents after heroic Hobbit, Samwise Gamgee. He also
stated that his brother Cirdan was named after the Telerin elf, also from Lord
of the Rings. It’s certainly our culture to feel inspired by characters
in movies and novels, and Lord of the Rings is certainly full of
inspiration. The mythical and magical creatures that appear provide only
further motivation – there is a choice of heroic characters, evil characters,
or even characters like Gollum who could be seen as a misunderstood creature.
We learn to love these characters and we find we have things in common and can
relate to them.
Creatures like dwarves, elves and wizards are growing in popularity as the demand for fantasy increases. Tolkien was quite revolutionary for his time, and he has certainly set the standard when it comes to writing epic fantasy, and the fact he developed a whole new world and different languages for the different species in the trilogy only adds to the magnificence of it all!
Lord of the Rings Dog Name Considerations
There are many different things to consider when choosing the right moniker for your new addition. Remember to take your time when choosing and do your research. Write down names that you like so you have a number to work from and you can narrow down your choices. If you’re a Lord of the Rings fan, then why not read on for more inspiration from the male and female lists below, inspired by Lord of the Rings.
Considerations to make when naming your dog, can be things like size, breed, color, and temperament. If you have a white or cream brave pooch, you could go for Legolas, or Gimli the red-headed dwarf may inspire you for your red-headed pooch. If your dog is elegant and humble, but dark in color, you may consider the name Aragorn, or for a beautiful, dark pooch you may choose Aragorn’s true love, Arwen. If you have a large pooch, you may want to use a name like Sharku, the name of an Orc, or you could choose a hobbit inspired name for your tiny four-legged friend.
There is lots of inspiration to be gained from the trilogy, and with so many heroes it is difficult to choose. Shout out the names you like to your dog and see if your pooch responds to any of your selected names!
