Introduction

The Miniature Pinscher, popularly known as the “Min Pin,” is a dog breed that originated from Germany. This German dog breed looks similar to a Doberman but smaller. Contrary to popular belief, Miniature Pinschers are neither descendants of the Doberman nor developed from them. As a matter of fact, Min Pins already existed before Dobermans were even developed. This breed was developed from three different dog breeds: German Pinscher, Dachshund, and the Italian Greyhound. Thunder and Lightning

The American Kennel Club officially ranked the Miniature Pinscher as the 68th most popular dog breed among 189 dog breeds. The German breed is relatively popular among the general population of dog owners but oddly enough, only a small number of celebrities and other famous personalities are known to own the breed. The German breed is also not the movie star type, mostly due to the fact that a Min Pin hardly stays still for a long time. As a result, they don’t belong to the top priority of breeds that directors seek to star in films. Fortunately, the breed made an appearance in one of the most popular dog films in history. In the 2010 family comedy film Marmaduke, two Miniature Pinschers played the roles of Thunder and Lightning.

Marmaduke follows the story of a suburban couple, Phil Winslow and Debbie Winslow, their three children, and their pet dog - a massive and mischievous Great Dane, Marmaduke. Marmaduke is the main character of this film, hence the title. The Great Dane is an easily lovable dog but tends to always get into trouble. In the beginning of the film, Phil and Debbie Winslow work under the dog food company “Bark Organic” in Kansas. Phil then receives an offer from the head of the company and his boss, Don Twombly. This offer led him and his family to transfer to Orange County, California.

Once in California, Phil’s dog, Marmaduke, meets and befriends different groups of canines. Marmaduke first meets Mazie, a tomboy-ish Australian Shepherd voiced by Emma Stone. From there, Mazie immediately develops a crush on Marmaduke. Mazie introduces Marmaduke to a local canine gang so as to make him feel at home. Marmaduke met other canine breeds along the way, including a highly intelligent Dachshund named Raisin, an always anxious and fearful Chinese Crested Dog named Giuseppe, and a Rough Collie named Jezebel.

Later on, Marmaduke stumbles upon Jezebel’s boyfriend, a violent and easily jealous Beauceron named Bosco, who also happens to be the main antagonist of the film. This is where the Min Pins enter the picture. Bosco has two sidekicks, twin Miniature Pinschers named Thunder and Lightning. Thunder and Lightning would always help Bosco intimidate other canines, particularly male canines that Bosco grows jealous of. Albeit antagonistic, the roles of Thunder and Lightning are one for the books, most especially because it’s probably the only film role of the breed.

Today, the Miniature Pinscher remains to be unpopular and underrated within the film industry. However, this has not affected their status as one of the most preferred breeds for a home pet or companion.
