Introduction
The Pumi is an interesting little herding breed that hails
from Hungary. This unique looking sheepdog resembles a koala bear and is a
mischievous companion. When you make the decision to add a Pumi to your family
you will be adding a fun-loving and super smart canine. Finding a name for your
new Pumi may be a bit of a challenge, however, many Pumi owners pay homage to
their homeland by finding a name with Hungarian origins. While some Hungarian
names just do not naturally roll off the tongue, there are some that are
interesting, fun and easy to pronounce that would be great for your new Pumi.
Pumi Dog Names in Pop Culture
With the Pumi being one of the best kept secrets of Hungary for so long it is no wonder people do not know much about this cute, interesting breed. Most people in the United States were given their first glance at the Pumi during the prestigious 2017 Westminster Kennel Club dog show that is held at Madison Square Garden in New York City and televised for millions of viewers to enjoy. The American Kennel Club (AKC) granted full registration rights to the Pumi, plural form is Pumik, in 2016 making it the 190th AKC recognized breed. The Pumi was highlighted as one of only three new breeds to be presented at the 2017 Westminster shows and Bikfic was especially showcased as a strong contender. Bikfic, pronounced Bic-fits, is owned by Marika Foreman of Somerville, New Jersey. Bikfic and his half brother Csibesz, pronounced Chee-bess, keep Marika on her toes as they run and play throughout her yard. Bikfic has the typical Pumi ears that look a lot like fuzzy satellite dishes and closely resemble a koala bear and the alert, happy expression that makes him so lovable. Bikfic was invited to compete at the 2017 Westminster dog show because he is one of the top ranked Pumik in the country. He earned his grand championship in 2016 at the Boardwalk Kennel Club dog show giving him enough points to qualify for the Westminster dog show. His brother Csibesz has retired from the show ring and will not be making the journey to New York. He does however still compete from time to time in United Kennel Club (UKC) events in the altered or neutered class.
Another seasoned Pumi competitor is Agyag, a Hungarian import. She also made her presence known at the 2017 Westminster Kennel Club dog show. Prior to journeying to the United States to join the Catskills Kennel, Agyag earned her Junior Hungarian Championship and also competed at the World Dog Show in Budapest, Hungary in 2013. Agyag also earned her FCI-ITB Traditional Style Herding certificate in May of 2013 at the Hortobagy International Herding Trial sanctioned by the FCI. Agyag earned her AKC grand championship and her spot at the 2017 Westminster dog show where she won Select Bitch in the breed ring.
Catskill Kennel has been prominent at the Westminster Kennel Club dog show with their outstanding Pumik since they were first allowed in breed competition. In 2018, Catskill Kennel was represented by Anka, a homebred female. Anka is the only Pumi in history to win two Best of Breed awards at the Eukanuba/Royal Canis AKC National dog show in Orlando, Florida. She won Best of Breed in 2014 and 2016. Anka also goes down in history as the first Pumi to win Best of Breed at the 2017 Westminster Kennel Club dog show. Anka was invited back to the Westminster dog show in 2018 where she won Best of Opposite Sex. Anka has now retired from the conformation show ring but can still be seen enjoying her time at agility trials.
Pumi Dog Name Considerations
When trying to decide on a name for your new Pumi, you may want to take the time to get to know them especially if you have never owned one of these quirky little dogs. Their fun loving personality will help you find the right name for them. While the Pumi is not a well known breed, they are gaining popularity and there seems to be a trend in the names that are given. Most Pumik that are currently in the show ring sport Hungarian names and some would argue it is because many are imported into the United States from Hungary. This is not always the case, even U.S. born Pumik are being given Hungarian inspired names such as Anka, Bicfic or Csibesz. If you are not a fan of names with Hungarian origins, do not worry, there is not a written rule anywhere that says you have to name your Pumi a Hungarian name! Just remember to include the entire family in the decision and make sure everyone can properly pronounce the name so your new puppy does not get confused. Make a list of your favorite names and then start narrowing it down until everyone agrees on your new Pumi’s name.
