Introduction
Following the tradition of the animated films Happy Feet and Surf's Up, Rio tells the story of a family of macaws. Rio is set in Rio de Janeiro, and the original movie was so popular that a sequel was released in 2014. Blu is the star macaw; he is rescued by a young girl, who raises him after Blu falls out of a moving truck. Blu is often scared to fly - no one has ever taught him how - and he is often mocked by the Canadian geese that winter in Rio. The timid Blu is given a big responsibility; he is asked to help repopulate the macaw population. Eventually, Blu will help to protect birds like himself from smugglers.
Rio Dog Names in Pop Culture
Certainly, Blue is one of the most common traditional names of dogs in North America. Often, owners will give their pup this moniker because of the dog’s coat color (which is often more of a gray with blue tones). Of course, there are dog breeds known for their bluish coloring, such as the Blue Heeler or a Bluetick Coonhound.
One blue dog which is rather popular is the beloved cartoon character from Blue’s Clues. Blue is the animated puppy belonging to (originally) Steve, then (during the latter half of the series), Joe. Regardless of his human companion, Blue works to improve the education of his pre-school viewing audience. Using barks to communicate, Blue often left a trail of clues that his audience was to use sort of like a puzzle to learn. Blue always posed a question that the clues answered. Blue is a female puppy, and she has a brother named Sprinkles.
Blue appears in all 160 episodes of the hit cartoon. The cartoon initially appeared on Nickelodeon in 1996, and ran until 2006. A spin-off, Blue’s Room, debuted in 2004, but did not do as well as the original cartoon. Blue’s Clues was often so popular because of its original format. Children were invited to go on a treasure hunt with Blue. This was intended to help children develop decision making skills.
Blue’s Clues was so popular that it became a live performance, touring enterprise. The crew of the show began touring the United States in 1999. Over 2 million people attended the very popular shows, and the tour had at least 1,000 stops for performances. Blue’s Clues was awarded several Emmys. It was nominated for honors in children’s programming and in developing educational software. The popular show has gone into syndication in over 100 countries throughout the world. In fact, Blue’s Clues was one of the first shows to incorporate sign language into its format. Prior to Dora the Explorer, Blue’s Clues was the longest running Nickelodeon show.
Another famous Blue is the Blue Dog artwork created by George Rodrigue. A Louisiana native, Rodrigue created the Blue Dog line of art based on a Louisiana legend, the tale of the loup-garou. The loup-garou is the Acadiana version of the werewolf. Rodrigue painted his Blue Dog much like his deceased dog, Tiffany, copying her stance and build. The Blue Dog is a common sight around Louisiana, particularly Rodrigue’s hometown of New Iberia.
Rio Dog Name Considerations
Anyone who has ever been around young puppies knows that they often established what some might call a "pecking order" - some pups are more dominant than others, and they tend to set a protocol as to the behavior of others. The Canadian geese which spend time near the bookstore (owned by Blu's rescuer, Linda) often pick on Blu because he can't fly the way they can. Blu is intimidated by these other birds, but the viewer soon learns that the shy macaw is more of a hero than first thought. For this reason, shy pups might be the best suited for a Rio-inspired name. By the same token, heroic pups are also perfect fits for a Rio-inspired name.
