Introduction
Schipperke Dog Names in Pop Culture
The Schipperke breed is a small, black dog from Belgium that resembles a Spitz or a tiny Belgian Shepherd. The Schipperke was a working dog aboard seafaring vessels traveling between Antwerp and Brussels. However, the breed first caught the attention of the Belgian monarch, Queen Marie Henriette, in 1885 and rose in popularity since that time. The little dog is an all black fluffy breed with no tail and was a particular favorite of Lucille Ball, the famous American actress from I Love Lucy. Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz had a great love for the Schipperke breed and kept many of the little dogs over the years. One of Lucy's Schipperkes had the most unlikely name for the breed; its name was Ginger. Ginger, as a dog's name, is not so unlikely but it usually used for a red or even golden colored dog. The Schipperke is jet black in color. The name was given to the little dog as a representation of Lucy's fiery red hair rather than a description of the dog's appearance. Ginger went with Lucy everywhere and became a dog celebrity in her own right.
The Schipperke is not a well-known breed in the U.S., and some people might confuse it for a Pomeranian without knowing. However, a 2004 film helped put the Schipperke in American pop culture. The film is about two tiger cubs that are separated at birth. While one lives in relative peace, the other is forced into a life of entertainment for a circus. The tiger cub living in peace is part of a family that also keeps a Schipperke. True to the breed's temperament and disposition, the Schipperke named Bittsi, antagonizes the tiger cub and chases it around. The name, Bittsi, is not a reference to the seafaring history of this dog but a descriptive one indicating the size of the Schipperke.
From the Belgian aristocracy to Lucille Ball's heart and other appearances in popular culture, the Schipperke is an adorable but formidable breed. It's association with sailing and guarding are equally well known, and people do not need to understand Flemish to get that impression from the name, Schipperke.
