Introduction
While Sherlock Holmes is a fantastic series of books, in recent years the television series has gained a cult following as well. Over the years there have been many Sherlock adaptations. Some have been successful, while others invoked the rage of a century-old fanbase. If you want to adapt Sherlock Holmes, you must do it properly. A few people were skeptical when BBC decided to adapt Sherlock for a modern audience, but the eyebrows lowered when the first episode aired. It was a masterpiece that immediately captured the fans’ attention. Now, we have adapted the series into a dog naming guide.
Sherlock Dog Names in Pop Culture
There are a few dogs in the series that could have been featured here. We could talk about the Hound of Baskerville, which turned out to be nothing more than an elaborate hoax. You know that a demonic science experiment dog is probably not going to pop up on screen, but the episode is done so well that you can’t help but get a fright. We could also have spoken about Redbeard. This is a touchy subject since we were led to believe that Redbeard was Sherlock’s childhood friend. All throughout the series, we were led to believe a certain thing. In typical Sherlock fashion, we were distracted by red herrings until we were led to a heart-shattering reveal.
Redbeard was not Sherlock’s dog, in fact, Redbeard was never a dog. Redbeard was something else entirely, and fans of the show were not ready for that reveal. All these dogs deserve a mention and it was wonderful to see how well the show’s creators incorporated dogs into the narrative. They were not shoe-horned in for views but were introduced in a way that felt natural. Out of all these dogs, our top pick had to be Toby. The Baskerville Hound was a hoax and Redbeard made us cry, but Toby was a delight.
Toby was a very talented dog that was brought in the episode “The Six Thatchers”. Sherlock must solve a baffling case involving murder, mystery and a few Margaret Thatcher busts. When Sherlock gets stumped, he brings in Toby. Toby manages to lead the team to their next clue and the story ends well. You never see the ending coming and it does everything you have come to expect from a Sherlock episode. Toby managed to endear himself to the team as well as to fans. As soon as the episode aired, there was an outcry to make Toby a regular member of the cast. Most people would have loved to see Watson and Sherlock adopt a new furry friend. To be honest, though, Sherlock’s apartment might not have been the best environment for a talented dog like Toby. Not to mention the fact that Mrs. Hudson would not take lightly to a massive dog living in the upstairs flat. Sir Conan Doyle regularly featured dogs in his stories, he used them to find clues that Sherlock couldn’t, which makes this a lovely nod to the source material.
Sherlock Dog Name Considerations
BBC’s Sherlock is a fast-paced and witty series. It is full of modern banter and drama without taking away from Doyle’s original vision. If Doyle had been alive today, there is no doubt that he would have enjoyed this fantastic series. Sherlock is portrayed by the always delightful Benedict Cumberbatch, while Dr. Watson is portrayed by Martin Freeman. The cast boasts some of the best talent British entertainment could find and the result is fantastic. You cannot help but be swept away in the mystery of it all. When it comes down to it, your guess as to “whodunnit?” is never right.
The show manages to portray Sherlock in a very human light, he has weaknesses, but he is still the masterful freelance detective. He works by his own set of rules and no-one can get in his way when he is on the trail. If that villain is Moriarty, then you are in for one wild ride. Not only did they get Sherlock right, they got the main villain as well. He is one of the most entertaining villains on modern television. All in all, this series is wonderful, and it has a few good names for dogs too.
