Introduction
The Slovensky Kopov is also known as the Slovak Hound or Slovakian Hound, is a scent hound with a lightweight but solid bone structure. They are medium sized hounds with a distinctive black coat with tan markings. The Slovensky Kopov is an intelligent dog and has great courage and endurance. They do require early socialization but are relatively easy to train. Being a typical hound, they can stubborn or willful and do expect to get their way. They require a strong leader in the home. The Slovensky Kopov will be suspicious of strangers and does not do well in a home with pets other than dogs. They can become aggressive towards other pets.
Slovensky Kopov Dog Names in Pop Culture
While the Slovensky Kopov is not a common breed in the United States, there are a handful of breeders working hard to promote the breed and show people just how fantastic these hounds are as family companions. The American Kennel Club has accepted the Slovensky Kopov into its Foundation Stock Service (AKC FSS) which is the first step to becoming fully recognized as a breed by the AKC. Since the breed originated in Slovakia, it makes sense that the greatest number of breeders is still located there. One such breeder is spod Kunovej Kennels owned by Stefan and Josef Matta. Trevis spod Kunovej, or Trevis for short, is a striking Slovensky Kopov that was born in 2011 at Matta’s kennel. His sire, Peri Morske Oko, and his dam, Kendy spod Kunovej, both have competed in conformation shows throughout Europe and they have also competed in field trials proving they are more than just a pretty dog. However, they have not been as successful in the show ring or field as their son, Trevis. Trevis was the Junior Club Winner in 2012 in Slovakia. He has also won the Slovak Beauty Champion and Slovak Junior Beauty Champion. During his show career, he was a four time Junior Conformity Certificate (CAJC) winner for puppies. He also was a six time Certificat d’Aptitude au Champion (CAC), two-time Reserve Certificat d’Apritude au Championnat International de Beaute (Res. CACIB) winner, and four-time Certificat d’Apritude au Championnat International de Beaute (CACIB) winner. At the Grand Prix National Breeds Dog Show Trevis earned second place in his class. He is also a multiple Best of Breed and Best of Opposite Sex winner. In the field, Slovensky Kopovs are known for their tenacity and endurance. Trevis has excelled in the field earning his Diviaciar title through the Hunting Association Olsava Davidov. Trevis has also earned a CACT SR title and a Reserve CACIT title. He competed in hound trials, scenthound trials of small breeds, preliminary scenthound trials and earned I.price awards in each. Trevis also participated in the Andrej Renco Memorial Field Hunt and earned an I.price award for his tracking abilities.
The Mattas have a combined 60 years of hunting and breeding experience. They are a father-son duo that has bred Alpine Dachsbracke, Jagdterrier, Dachshunds, and German Shorthair Pointers before they discovered the Slovensky Kopov and were hooked. They brought home their first Slovensky Kopov in 1960 from Koloman Slimak, a top Slovensky Kopov breeder. Since then their kennel, spod Kunovej, has produced and raised 30 hunt-worthy Slovensky Kopovs. All 30 were able to obtain their breeding qualifications allowing the Mattas to keep producing quality dogs.
Slovensky Kopov Dog Name Considerations
Bringing home a new puppy is exciting and a little bit stressful, and picking a name for your new bundle of joy should not add to the stress levels. Most people will not know what a Slovensky Kopov is or where to find one, but if you are a lover of the breed and dedicated to finding a breeder, you will be adding a devoted, intelligent, and happy hound to your home. Take time to get to know your new Slovensky Kopov before saddling them with a name that just might not fit them. Being a breed from Slovakia, look into Slovak names that are easier to pronounce for the whole family. Being a hound, some Slovensky Kopov owners may choose more typical hound names such as Bandit, Bear, Bruno, Daisy, or Lady. However, if you want to think more outside of the box, look at names such as Imrich or Henrich which means ruler of his household. Maybe your new Slovensky Kopov seems to have a wise soul, therefore Sofia meaning a wise woman or Duska or Dusek, meaning spirit or soul, would be an ideal choice. No matter what name you decide for your new Slovensky Kopov, you should enjoy the time you have with your new hound, they are not with us for long but they truly steal a piece of our heart while they are here.
