Introduction
The Smooth Collie is a variety of Collie that is very similar to the Rough Collie. The Smooth Collie was bred for herding and has a short, dense coat. The Smooth Collie is a happy, trainable family dog that loves to have a job to do. The Smooth Collie, like its Rough counterpart, is alert and vocal and if not trained properly can become a nuisance. The Smooth Collie makes an excellent pet for children and also excels doing therapy and service work. They are eager to learn and enjoy spending time out and about with their families. The Smooth Collie is an excellent alternative for those who love the Rough Collie but are not fond of the excessive coat.
Smooth Collie Dog Names in Pop Culture
With Lassie being one of the most iconic dogs in show business, it can be tough being the short-haired version of Lassie and getting stares from people who are not accustomed to seeing Lassie without her bouffant coat. However, the Smooth Collie is just as elegant and breathtaking. They are easier keepers than the Roughs and grooming is much less intense. Most Rough Collie breeders will also breed the Smooth Collie and it is easy to find a Smooth Collie to add to your home. Kings Valley Collies is one such breeder; they breed both Rough Collies and Smooth Collies. In 2010, Cameron, BISS Champion Kings Valley Demuir Here I Am ROM, showed at the Collie Club of America’s specialty show. Cameron is a sable and white Smooth Collie and wowed judge Carl Williford. Cameron was handled by Diane Steele for the Best in Variety competition. He was named CCA’s Best of Variety: Smooth and Best Stud Dog: Smooth by judge Bill Holbrook. Cameron was handled by Nancy McDonald in the Stud Dog competition. Cameron’s mother, Champion Kings Valley Just My Style HC TC, or Tawny, was one of those special Collies that Leslie Rappaport, owner of Kings Valley Collies, calls one of her heart dogs. In 2006, he won an Award of Merit under judge Anne Cross and was handled by Nancy McDonald. In 2008, Cameron won his second Award of Merit under judge Tom Coen and was handled by Nancy Anstruther. Having Cameron win Best in Specialty Show (BISS) at the Collie Club of America’s specialty was an exhilarating experience. Cameron was Tawny’s top winning son and was retired from the show ring and breeding program in 2014. Cameron is owned by Lana Group by bred by Leslie Rappaport.
Kings Valley Collies is located in Kings Valley, Oregon and is operated by Leslie and Eva Rappaport. Aside from competing in conformation shows, Kings Valley Collies also compete in obedience, herding, and agility trials. They also train specific Collies for therapy and service work. Many people watch online as Leslie trains her Collies to become service dogs. Leslie will video many training sessions and offers advice to others looking to start training for service work or those simply looking for a loving companion. She is currently training her 24th and 25th service dogs. Champion Marnus Kings Valley Coalition TC, or Cole, is a Smooth Collie who is training to be a service dog and Bayside Big Island Dream TC, or Kona, is a Rough Collie also training to become a service dog.
Smooth Collie Dog Name Considerations
The Smooth Collie, like their rough counterpart, originated in Scotland and is as majestic, intelligent, and loving. There are several Smooth Collie breeders within the United States and Canada, but remember that Smooth Collies do have health problems and a responsible breeder will perform the necessary health testing to ensure your new puppy is healthy. After you bring your new Smooth Collie puppy home, you will probably start your search for the perfect name. Take some time to get to know your new family member and learn their little personality quirks, many times your new companion will help you find a name that fits them. When searching for a name, keep in mind that you do not want to give them a name that sounds very similar to people and pets in the family and avoid naming them the same as other dogs within your neighborhood. Confusion will abound at the community dog park if your dog has the same name as others who frequent the park. Do not saddle them with a name that sounds similar to common commands you will be using during their training. This will also cause confusion and make their training more difficult. Find a name that is unique, fun, and aptly describes your newest companion!
