Introduction
Space Buddies Inspired Dog Names in Pop Culture
The success of the Air Bud film, featuring a basketball-playing Golden Retriever named Buddy, paved the way for the creation of sequels and spin-offs, including the Air Buddies film series. Space Buddies belongs to this film series and by the time this direct-to-DVD movie was released in 2009, the five pups known as the Buddies have already become an established part of the Disney and the franchise.
Space Buddies begins with Sam and his puppy, Buddha hanging out and gazing at the stars. During this time, Sam voiced out his desire to touch the moon. The next day, Sam’s school was set to take a field trip to Vision Enterprises, where the students will get to witness an exclusive test launch viewing of the new Vision One spacecraft. Since pets were not allowed on the trip, Sam decided to leave Buddha at home.
However, Buddha had other plans and escapes in order to meet up with the other Buddies, namely B-Dawg, Mudbud, Rosebud and Budderball. He invites the Buddies to come join him in the viewing of the test launch. The other four dogs agree and the group hides in the school bus as they make their way to Vision Enterprises. Dr. Finkel, the head of the tour, shows the students an automatic outfitter that is used by Sam. Watching the action close by, the pups use the machine as well, which equips them with suits.
They then proceed to check out the Vision One interior and places themselves in seats, where they were accidentally sealed in. At the control center, the lead scientist Pi announces that the ship is ready to launch. The remote pilot, Astro Spalding, then proceeds with the launch and activates the shuttle, not knowing that the Buddies are inside.
This was the start of some space adventure by the canines. After the operators land the spacecraft at the Russian Research Space Station to refuel, the dogs leave Vision One and decide to do some exploration. At the station, they meet a Bull Terrier named Spudnick, who is being cared for by a cosmonaut living in R.R.S.S. named Yuri. Surprised at the presence of the puppies, Yuri keeps them locked in but Spudnick comes to their rescue.
Vision One’s course then heads for the moon. It is also during this time that the operators find out about the presence of the puppies inside the spacecraft, which causes a media frenzy back home. After some challenges that involved meteor showers and errors in the spacecraft, the Buddies safely land the Vision One. The film ends with Buddha giving a piece of a moon rock to Sam as a fulfillment of his wish while Spudnick comes home to his owner, named Sasha.
Space Buddies Inspired Dog Name Considerations
When brainstorming for a fitting name for your new pup, it is a common practice to look at different pop culture references. This includes film and television, where canine characters are heavily featured. The Air Bud film franchise has created some of the most beloved dogs in pop culture, including the Buddies – a group of five Golden Retrievers who go on different adventures together.
If you want to give your dog a name that is inspired by the Space Buddies film, the most obvious route would be to choose a name from any of the five Buddies. Each of these pups has a distinct personality that can help influence your decision. For instance, if you have a calm and gentle dog, then Buddha would be an appropriate name after the dog of the same name. Or if you have a female pup that is oozing with confidence, then the clear choice would be Rosebud, the only girl from the group.
If you happen to have a preference among the five Buddies, you can also choose to name your dog after them. For example, if you are partial to B-Dawg, the funny, hip-hop obsessed Golden Retriever pup, you could pick this name for your own pooch. You can also use the other canine characters in the film ( for instance, Spudnick) as a source of name inspiration.
