Introduction
When there are conversations about who the greatest film directors of all time are, one name that constantly pops up is that of Quentin Tarantino. This American filmmaker, screenwriter, producer and occasional actor began his career during the late 1980s, when he wrote, directed and starred in the film My Best Friend’s Birthday, which was never released. However, it was not until he wrote and directed the 1992 film crime thriller Reservoir Dogs that his career took off. From that time, Tarantino directed several other amazing films, including Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, Kill Bill, Death Proof, Inglorious Basterds and Django Unchained. Aside from the films he directed himself, he also had a hand in writing or producing other critically-acclaimed films such as Four Rooms and From Dusk Till Dawn. To date, Tarantino is considered as among the best filmmakers of the century.
Tarantino Dog Names in Pop Culture
Because of Quentin Tarantino’s impact in the film industry and pop culture as a whole, he has gained a significant cult following and made a mark in his field. This is also the reason why Tarantino-related names are popular among pet owners. There have been lots of dogs around the world who were named after a character created by Tarantino or is related to his work. A prime example of a famous canine with a Tarantino dog name is Quentin, also known as “The Miracle Dog”.
The story of Quentin, a Basenji mix with auburn coat and pointed ears, began on the morning of August 4, 2003. On this day, employees the of St. Louis Animal Control pound, which kills around six to eight dogs daily, tranquilized 1-year old pup Quentin along with other dogs as they wait for their turn in the gas chamber. Afterwards, the dogs were placed inside an airtight box where they spent 15 minutes being pumped by toxic carbon monoxide.
When pound employee Rosemary Ficken opened the door of the chamber, she was shocked to see an unharmed Quentin wagging his tail and looking right at her while the rest of the other dogs lay dead. According to Ficken, in her 15 years working at the city pound, she has never seen a dog survive the gas chamber. Albeit a bit strung and “drunk-like”, Quentin was perfectly healthy. Ficken did not know what to do about the situation but decided that she couldn’t put the dog through the chamber again. She remembers thinking that Quentin had a strong urge to survive and that there is someone out there who should have him.
That someone turned out to be animal welfare activist Randy Grim. He was the founder of Stray Rescue of St. Louis and often referred to Quentin as a “miracle dog”. After getting a call about rescuing the gas chamber survivor, Grim immediately took the pooch from the pound and worked to find him a home. Eventually, however, he decided to keep Quentin for himself. What he did not expect, however, was how much of an impact the dog would have on his life.
Together, the duo launched a nationwide campaign against the inhumane use of gas chambers to put down unwanted animals. Quentin became the face of the no-kill movement and became a catalyst for animal welfare. In fact, thanks to their efforts, the St. Louis animal shelter ultimately ended their use of gas chambers for euthanasia.
On 2013, Quentin “retired” from his campaigning and decided to live out the remaining years of his life in Grim’s Rescue Ranch. On October 19, 2018, Quentin suffered a stroke and was euthanized two days later. His remains were buried at the ranch.
Tarantino Dog Name Considerations
When given the task to pick a name for your beloved furbaby, it is natural to think long and hard about your choice. Just like choosing a name for a newborn, albeit with a bit more leniency, the name that you will give to your dog is permanent and long lasting. Moreover, you need to consider the implications of your choice. For instance, is your name choice easy enough to learn and understand? Can you proudly shout it out loud when you are in a public setting? These are all valid things to consider before making a final decision.
Pop culture has always been a gold mine for dog name inspirations. For fans of acclaimed director Quentin Tarantino, there are plenty of name ideas to choose from. One option would be to pick a name based on any of the characters created by the filmmaker. Tarantino has produced some of the most iconic film characters of all time; from Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill to Inglorious Basterds and Django Unchained, you certainly will not run out of options. Do you have a personal favorite out of all his films? If yes, you can name your dog after a character from that movie.
Another option would be to name your four-legged pal after some of Tarantino’s frequent collaborators. Actors like Samuel L. Jackson, Steve Buscemi, Uma Thurman and Tim Roth are almost always present in all of Tarantino’s movies.
