Toby (the most common spelling) is a very popular name for male pups. Toby is a name popular among both dogs who never know fame and fortune as well as some very popular and well-known pups. 

One famous Toby is a canine detective. This pup is the pet of Sherlock Holmes in Disney's The Great Mouse Detective. Toby assists Basil (the mouse detective) in solving mysteries. Although the pair is an odd match, the mouse and the dog are the best of friends. Toby often utilizes his nose to solve the case. He assists in many other ways, and his help is always valuable to Basil and Dr. Dawson. 

One of the very first cartoons featured an animated canine named Toby the Pup. Toby was the subject of twelve cartoons. These cartoon shorts were created between 1930 and 1931. Toby was, in many ways, an answer to the Krazy Kat cartoon, which was produced by the same man, Charles Mintz. Toby wore a custodian's hat and is said to resemble another cartoon at the time (a cartoon pup named Bimbo). Most of the twelve cartoons that featured Toby the Pup are now lost. One portion of a cartoon short exists in the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. 

Another Toby that has become quite the social media sensation is a mixed breed pup that is most often pictured with his "human," Carter. Carter and Toby are the frequent subjects of Carter's mother's Instagram account; together the pair has over 32,000 followers on Instagram alone. What began as the mom's ability to share family photos garnered the pup quite a popular following. 

Upon doing a simple Google search, one will find many pups on the web named Toby. Most of them are in the midst of puppy shenanigans. One Golden Retriever finds any and every muddy spot possible; that pup's video alone has many views. Toby is a wildly popular name, and dogs with this moniker are found in both pop culture and in your own home.
