Introduction

The year 2001 saw a great interest in street racing; this is largely due to the popular film The Fast and the Furious. This action film told the story of Dominic Toretto, a street racer who, along with his sister and several friends, are under suspicion of criminal activity. The legendary late Paul Walker plays the part of an undercover cop (Brian O'Conner); the actor had a passion for racing just as the characters in the movie. Eventually, Walker's character realizes that he has been surveilling the wrong crew. Though O'Conner and Toretto must work through trust issues, the pair become trusted friends by the story's end.

Whether we would admit it or not, most dog owners do talk to our pups. We might tell them when we leave for work or to run an errand where we are headed and when we will be back. We continue to talk to them although we don't expect them to talk back. However, one animated pup not only answers his owner, but he also holds distinct conversations with his family. Brian Griffin is a member of the Griffin family of Family Guy, a long-running cartoon series. His character was created in 1988, and he is the brainchild of the series creator, Seth MacFarlane. (The creator also voices Brian's part.) He is a writer in addition to his doggie duties, but Brian's writing career is merely a pipe dream.

Brian could be considered an embodiment of MacFarlane. Brian walks on his hind legs and often utilizes his front legs more like human arms. Furthermore, he is often portrayed as more of a human character than a pet. (Don't we all treat our pups like they are a member of the family? The Griffins not only do this, but the audience gets to see how a dog might react if they could talk back to us.)

Brian is especially close to Stewie, the infant son of the Griffin clan. Brian is supposed to have attended an Ivy League school, Brown University, but failed to graduate when he left the university before completing one last class. Brian also served his country in the Iraq conflict, and, at one point, he attempts to help Stewie sign up to serve in the military. (This plot is later thwarted.)

Brian enjoys writing, but he just can't seem to get his career to take off. While writing, Brian is often portrayed as smoking and relaxing with a martini (again, more of his human attributes). He has written many novels and essays, and he even plagiarized one essay in order to get a break. He even wrote a screenplay, which a local television station accepted but rewrote so that it was unrecognizable as Brian's work. However, Brian does not let this stop him. He continues to write screenplays, and actor James Woods even intervenes in one episode to help make one particular script more comical (and therefore more likely to sell). Brian is supposedly eight years of age, and the writers of the show really don't allow him to age. He is an integral part of the family and the plot of the show as well. He is wildly popular with fans of the series.
