Alexandre Dumas is the author of the historical novel The Three Musketeers, a novel that is rather entertaining for those of our age, but, in Dumas' time, was a commentary on current events. Dumas follows the journey of young d'Artagnan, a youth wishing to join the Musketeers of the Guard. Although d'Artagnan is not initially successful in his quest, he does encounter three musketeers - Athos, Porthos, and Aramis. With these musketeers, he becomes involved in happenings of the government. Much of the fiction of the novel is based on the lives of those prominent in the French government during the life of the true d'Artagnan (Charles de Batz-Castelmore d'Artagnan).

Certainly, one of the most popular dog names of all time would have to be "Lady." In The Three Musketeers, the "lady" refers to Lady de Winter (often called "Milady" in Dumas' novel). Lady de Winter is the epitome of evildoing (and, Dumas uses her character to critique what he sees as wrong in the French government). She is a vengeful character, and she intends to have d'Artagnan murdered. Regardless, her beauty is quite charming, and d'Artagnan finds himself having a difficult time seeing her for the ugliness in her soul. In many ways, she is like France itself - quite beautiful and charming. However, the corruption in the affairs of the state stain the beauty of the country.

Perhaps the most recognized "Lady" is the beloved dog from Disney's Lady and the Tramp. Lady is a purebred American Cocker Spaniel. She is the apple of her owners' eyes, that is, until a new baby joins the family. Lady adjusts to her new human friend, but, she finds trouble when she is left behind as her human family takes a vacation. Lady is under the care of Sarah, who believes that Lady has destroyed some property and needs a muzzle. While at the pet store, Lady runs away. It is during this time that she meets and falls in love with a mixed-breed dog known as Tramp. Although Lady believes she is falling in love with Tramp, she returns home to take care of the new baby. There is much misunderstanding as Aunt Sarah believes the dogs would try to harm the new baby, when in reality they are protecting it from a nefarious rat. Although Tramp has been taken to the dog pound, soon Lady makes her human family understand that the strange actions by the pups were merely misunderstood. Tramp is eventually adopted by Lady's human family, and Lady and Tramp create a family of their own.

Another dog named Lady has a story that ends happily. Lady, an older Labrador Retriever mix, was surrendered to a shelter by her family. Of course, Lady was heartbroken, and she eventually got away from the shelter. She walked back to her home, only to be returned a second time to the shelter. Fortunately, the heiress to the Wrigley Gum Company heard about Lady's plight, and she adopted Lady. Lady now takes up residence at a large Florida mansion owned by Helen Rich, and she joins other very pampered dogs. Lady is now referred to as "Lucky" Lady.

Many things should be considered when choosing a name based upon the Dumas novel, The Three Musketeers. First, the novel is set in France - particularly, in Paris. Therefore, dogs of French origin are perfect for names associated with The Three Musketeers. Certainly, one of the first breeds that comes to mind is the Poodle. The Standard Poodle is considered to be very much a French dog, although its popularity has spread across the world.

The French Mastiff, the Dogue de Bordeaux, is best known as the breed featured in Turner and Hooch. Hooch played a comic foil to Tom Hanks in the film, with his predominant feature being his propensity for slobbering.

Two breeds which find their origins in the Pyrenean Mountains are also particularly suited for a name inspired by The Three Musketeers novel.
