The name "Hopatcong" is thought to derive from Native American languages and means something like "stone upon water." The water referred to is the huge Lake Hopatcong that adjoins the town's border. Lake Hopatcong has over 2,500 acres of freshwater and is a big recreational draw for water enthusiasts. Boating and fishing are important parts of the town's past. Years ago, the lake beckoned the wealthy folks from New York City.

This little borough is a picturesque community which offers many amenities for people with furry family members, including several parks that welcome leashed dogs! Maxim Glen is a park in the middle part of town.  It has a quarter-mile paved walking path that provides beautiful views of this well-landscaped and peaceful green spot. A fountain adds to the relaxing environment, and a bridge makes the stroll more varied.

Modick Park is a green space which has a gazebo used for community events and music. A walking path with benches along the way gives a person and a leashed canine companion some fresh air and easy exercise.  Picnic tables let a person share a meal or snack with their four-legged friend.

The borough does not have any veterinary clinics operating within its borders. Any veterinary attention, though, is easily obtainable in one of the many adjoining larger communities. This borough, even with its unusual name, is one you and Fido won't furget!

Randolph is located twelve miles south of Hopatcong. Randolph Township Dog Park has a fully fenced play place for your canine friend's off-leash exercise and socialization. All the local dogs go to Randolph, and they'd better be on their best behavior, because small and large pups play together here. A statue of a pooch gazes down and watches over all the pups as they play -- so they better play nicely!  The park has a terrain of gray stone mulch.  Large trees shade the benches within the area for the human folk's comfort. A water fountain makes it okay to forget those water bottles. This dog park is for Randolph residents only.
