East Elephant Butte

The Elephant Butte State Park is only eight miles away in Elephant Butte, and it is a pupperific spot to spend some quality time with your furry BFF. This is New Mexico’s largest State Park, so you’ll have plenty of open space for exercising Fido. Plus, you’ll enjoy stunning desert vistas and expansive blue sky. Choose from one of the park’s hikes. The West Lakeshore Trail runs 10 miles total, but can also be hiked in shorter sections. The 1.5 mile Luchini Trail takes you through sand dunes, while the Paseo del Rio Trail is perfect for spotting some of the local birds. Caballo Lake State Park

Take advantage of New Mexico’s warm sunshine by spending the day at Caballo Lake State Park. Only 10 miles south of Williamsburg, and to the east of Caballo, this State Park sits at the base of the Caballo Mountains and features the Caballo Reservoir. It’s a popular location for boating, kayaking, swimming and fishing. Four legged guests will appreciate the walking trail on the west side of the lake, as well as the pet friendly camping. You can either rough it in a tent or sleep in style in an RV. Fresh water is available, so make sure your furry pal gets plenty to drink. Sounds pupperific!

Central Hillsboro

If your pooch is a history buff, drive 30 miles southwest of Williamsburg to the small town of Hillsboro and head over to the Central Hillsboro neighborhood for the Hillsboro Walking Tour. As you and your leashed pal make your way around the city, you’ll get a real feel for the Old West way of life. The tour features historic houses and churches, ruins of an old courthouse and jail, Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Mission, and other interesting buildings. When you’re finished, stop by the Black Range Museum Public Park and wander around. Your pup can even cool off his paws in Percha Creek.

Kingston

If your pup needs to get away for a bit, plan a visit to the small community of Kingston. Located in the southeast corner of the Gila National Forest, this small community is 37 miles southwest of Williamsburg. For a primitive experience, spend a couple of nights in the dog friendly Kingston Campground. After hiking during the day, your pooch can gaze at the stars in the desert night sky. If you prefer sleeping in a bed, make a reservation at the Black Range Lodge.
