Pack up your pup and head to the South Baker neighborhood of the town of Baker, for an unstructured outdoor adventure. Here you will find Afton Canyon, which is comparable to the Grand Canyon, but is located in the California desert. Viewing the geological formations throughout offer intense scenic views that include the Mojave River. Wildlife is abundant here, which offers photographers amazing images to shoot. Your fur-ever friend will delight in running off leash. Make sure to be prepared for this outdoor, rural adventure by packing plenty of water, food and shelter from the sun to keep your pup cool.

East Baker
In the East Baker neighborhood in the town of Baker, the Mojave National Preserve is where adventurists flock. This preserve is located in the Mojave Desert and covers a spectacular 695,000 acres. You can explore to your heart's content with your pup. Sand dunes dot the landscape and large granite masses offer rock climbing to the sports enthusiast. Your pup will enjoy not having to wear his leash here. Be sure to pack plenty of water for this remote experience, and supplies for Fido, including some way to get out of the sun. A camera is absolutely required here!24
Southeast Baker
In the Southeast Baker neighborhood of Baker, the Kelso Dunes Trail is waiting for you and your pup to visit. This is a groomed trail which is often frequented by the area’s residents who enjoy the great outdoors in a more structured environment. This hiking path runs in the sand dunes for 2.7 miles one way. It is rated as ‘moderate’ and is suitable for most pawtastic pups. Make sure Fido’s fitness level is appropriate for this trail through beautiful scenery and wildflowers. It is important that dogs be kept on leash here. Pack water and food for your hike.12
Yermo
In the town of Yermo, 53 miles southwest of Baker, you and your pawtastic pup can enjoy the Liberty Sculpture Park together. This park offers award-winning statues to view and a beautiful scenic park where you can take your pup for a walk on the paved paths throughout. Fido is welcome here on leash to enjoy the artists’ works, and you can share your love of art with your fur-ever friend by your side. There are restrooms on site, but your pup will have to wait outside for you. Be sure to bring mutt mitts to keep this park pup-friendly.
Western Mojave Preserve
The Western Mojave Preserve is the western section of the large Mojave National Preserve that is located just south of Baker. You and your pawatastic pup will love taking a short hike together inside this large area. Hop on the Lake Tuendae Nature Trail in the tiny of Zzyzx inside the preserve, which is ready for those pups who like less of a challenge in their day! It is rated as ‘easy’ and is perfect for all fitness-level pups! This stroll will take you just .25 miles near Lake Tuendae, and offers beautiful sights and scenic views. Any pup will love being in the great outdoors with their best friend here. Fido can remain off leash for this stroll. Pack plenty of water.
