The best dog friendly neighborhoods in Tybee Island

Tybee East

Tybee Island is mostly a vacationer’s place to be. Local and visiting dogs hang out at the dog park located at Fort and Van Horne. The city site states it has two dog parks, but really it is a single dog park divided into an enclosure for small dogs, and another for large ones. The surface of the dog park is a mixture of dirt and mulch. The dog park has benches and water. Poop bags are supplied at the park. Dogs enjoying a vacation with their human can stay at numerous dog-friendly waterfront bed-and-breakfasts and rental condos. Mermaid Cottages has many units designed for the traveling dog. Four dogs of any size can stay at one of the Mermaid Cottages scattered all around Tybee Island for $200 a night. Restaurants like the Crab Shack, located at 40 Estill Hammock Road, have comfortable, dog-friendly outdoor dining.

Skidaway Island

Skidaway Island is 27 miles west of Tybee Island. Skidaway Island State Park is located at 52 Diamond Causeway. The state park has 588 acres of outdoor recreation and nature activities, including playgrounds, picnic areas, and a camping area. Dogs are allowed on leash in the State Park, and are allowed to camp. The state park is home to all kinds of waterfowl and wildlife, and is set amongst marsh and forest. Six miles of hiking trails get a dog some exercise while with their human companions. If Fido’s been a good boy, or if he needs a little trim, Blissful Buddha Pet Services has got him covered. They offer grooming services and even doggie massages!

Tybee Midtown

Fort Pulaski is a historic site away from the main beaches and vacation areas of Tybee Island. The fort is an interesting piece of military architecture, and is a dog-friendly place to take a hike on-leash. The fort has water fountains for dogs to use, benches along the pathways, and the fort itself allows dogs to visit. The trail itself is flat, and is an easy walk for dog and human. All parts of the fort are open to dogs except the Visitor Center. CoCo’s Sunset Grille, located at Old US Highway 80, offers some top notch seafood at dog-friendly outdoor tables. The staff serves up some cool handmade drinks for the human patron, and a cool dish of water for the companion dog. This restaurant is a stone’s throw from Fort Pulaski and makes for a comfortable stop over while headed east to beachfront lodging.

Downtown

Savannah is 18 miles west of Tybee Island. Savannah is a large city with many neighborhoods of its own. Savannah has three dog parks in its metropolitan area: Herty Pines Dog Park, Daffin Dog Park, and Mother Matilda Beasley Dog Park. Daffin Dog Park on E. Victory Drive is the biggest of the three. Daffin has separate areas for large and small dogs, and a third one that guarantees operation even when maintenance work needs to be done. Georgia dogs socialize and show some real Southern hospitality here. All three parks have water, benches, and dogs playing in them on a hot Georgia day can get pretty dusty. Savannah has all the shopping, restaurants, and amenities a dog and person could possible want.

Hilton Head Island

Hilton Head Island, South Carolina is 48 miles north of Tybee Island, but the drive is definitely worth it. Hilton Head Island has beaches that are, at various times of the year, open to dogs. Tybee Island has specific times that dogs are allowed on the beaches, and fines are stiff for violations. Sometimes, dogs and people just need to feel that squishy sand under the paws and toes. It is a bit of a drive to the beach, but from April 1st through September 30 dogs are permitted on the beach before 10 am and after 5 pm. Dogs can play anytime on the beach during the off-season. Alder Lane Beach Access and Burkes Beach are two beach destinations in Hilton Head Island.
