Hi, I'm Dana. I'm a college student who has had dogs as long as I've been alive. Dog training and walking often fell to me due to busy family members and I'm very familiar with many sizes and breeds of dog. Additionally, I was always reading breed profiles and dog magazines, which provided me a good understanding of other breeds and techniques. Finally, my siblings and I have been force-fed the Cesar Milan technique for a couple of years now by our mildly-obsessed mother.

Many people claim to be from a small town, but if you’re a resident of Vernonburg, Georgia, people can take that claim seriously! Vernonburg, which is located in Chatham County and is about ten miles from Savannah, is home to less than 150 residents. One might think that a small town might be newer, but Vernonburg actually dates back to 1748! Initially, it was intended to be a vacation community for wealthy Southerners looking to visit Savannah; today, the village consists of mostly residential properties and serves as a bedroom community for Savannah.
Typically, such a small town doesn’t have many dog-friendly dining options or dog parks, and Vernonburg is no exception. Don’t worry about that too much, though. With Savannah being so closeby, fun with your canine companion is just a bone’s throw away. Vernonburg doesn’t have any veterinarian clinics either, but there are plenty just outside of the town, whether you're looking for routine or emergency care for an injured pooch.
Vernonburg is a small town with a long history. If you’re looking to enjoy some relaxation but still want the amenities of having a larger city nearby, Vernonburg is the perfect place to be. Come by for a visit any time!
Beautiful summer days in Savannah are common, and if you want to get out of the house and bring your dog along, head to Savannah Botanical Gardens! The gardens are located about 15 minutes north of Vernonburg. If you’re not into flowers, you should still consider paying the spot a visit, though; there’s a nature trail, along with an archeological exhibit that’s sure to be a ball for everyone involved! Fido must remain on his leash while in the gardens, and it’s your responsibility to clean up after him. Make sure your phone is charged to take pictures!
What makes a good dog park? Ask Herty Pines Dog Park! This bark park has plenty of room for even the most energetic pup to tire himself out. With separate areas for small and large dogs, you can be sure that Fido is playing it safe while playing with his new fur-iends. Your dog is sure to love Herty Pines, but so are you! There are shaded seating areas for dog moms and dads. Parking is plentiful and free. The park also provides water for your dog and waste disposal bags, meaning you don’t have to bring them from home. What more could you pawssibly want?
If you want to grab a bite to eat and bring Fido along, Savannah’s Lamara Heights neighborhood has two delicious options and is just five miles up the road. The 5 Spot is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and dishes up great American fare. There are a couple of dog-friendly tables outside. Barberitos is another option. This chain restaurant serves up Tex-Mex classics including burritos, tacos, and more! Fido can join you at one of the patio tables outside. Your dog must be on a leash at both establishments, and you might want to bring along a water bowl to use.
Don’t let the size of Mother Matilda Beasley Dog Park fool you! This small dog park, located about 15 minutes from Vernonburg, is sure to be a good time for your playful pup. Give your dog the chance to make pawesome new friends; dogs are social animals, and playing with each other helps them develop manners. This bark park does provide water for Fido, so you don’t need to worry about bringing any from home. You will, however, want to bring along some trash bags to clean up after your dog. No one wants to step in any accidents left behind!
If you and your dog both love nature, head to Skidaway Island State Park, which is about 15 minutes east of Vernonburg. The park has over six miles of trails winding throughout it, so the two of you can go for a hike. Trails vary in intensity, so you can pick one that suits you. You can even make a weekend trip out of your visit! There are many campsites in the park, and Fido can join you at any of them. Your dog absolutely must remain on his leash at all times, both for his own safety and the safety of wildlife that lives in the park.
