Ocean Springs, Mississippi, is a sunny beach town located on the Gulf Coast and part of Jackson County. There are currently more than 17,000 residents in Ocean Springs. This, however, excludes the pet population, and as the people of Mississippi love their dogs, there are plenty of furry pals in Ocean Springs.
The main attraction for dogs in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, is the Ocean Springs beach. The beaches of the neighboring cities of Biloxi and Gulfport do not allow dogs, and while the Jackson County regulations state that all dogs have to be leashed, dogs can run around on the beach, although it's dependent on the dogs ability to listen and actually adhere to voice commands such as "come" or "return."
The large number of dog lovers in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, have started a petition in 2014 also to get their own off-leash dog park. Until the construction of a dog park in Ocean Springs is approved and finalized, residents with a dog can turn to the dog park at the Popp’s Ferry Recreation Area in Biloxi, which includes an enclosed area for off-leash exercise.
Planning a visit to Ocean Springs, Mississippi, and bringing pets along for the trip is a small trouble. As a resort town, Ocean Springs has plenty of pet-friendly hotels to choose from in different price ranges.
Head on over to Ocean Springs Beach if you and your dog are looking for some pawsome beach fun. All dogs are required to stay on leash while at the beach, and owners are urged to clean up after their pups. After some beach adventuring, grab a bite to eat at one of the many dog friendly restaurants that Ocean Springs has to offer, including Greenhouse on Porter which has amazing biscuits, or Eat Drink Love which offers breakfast and brunch options, sandwiches, and salads. Both restaurants have outdoor patios that welcome your dog to join you while you eat.
If you and Fido are looking to socialize and have a great evening, then visit downtown Ocean Springs and be awed by the number of dog-friendly restaurants that surround you. Check out favorites like French Kiss Pastries, Charred A Steak and Oyster Bar, and The Office Bar and Lounge. If you are looking for BBQ dishes that pair nicely with bourbon or craft beers, stop by Murky Waters. For those in the mood for some All-American food, Mosaics Tapas Restaurant loves when you bring your dog along, and even has bowls of ice cold water waiting for them on their outdoor patio. Enjoy a night of live music here with your pup.
If you and your pooch are looking for an outdoorsy adventure, head out to the Gulf Island National Seashore for a fun day of adventuring, or a few days of camping. This large and extensive preserve is located along the Gulf of Mexico, and includes mainland areas and parts of seven barrier islands of Florida and Mississippi. While your dog is visiting the Gulf Island, he must remain on a leash that is no longer than 6 feet long. Your dog is allowed on all the walking and hiking trails that the Gulf Island National Seashore has to offer. Certain campgrounds allow you to tie your dog to a post, so long as it doesn’t bother other campers.
Bayou Talla, right off Bienville Place, is a great area for you and your dog to visit if you want to get some good food and relax with your dog. If you are in the neighborhood, check out Finest Grind Coffee House and get a cup of artisan coffee and a panini. If coffee and sandwiches aren’t to your taste, then head on over to Castaways Bar and Grill that offers burgers, fish and chips, and steaks. Castaways always welcome your dog on their patio and the locals love their amazing seafood selection like the BBQ shrimp or the fried oyster basket.
If you’re looking for a great scenic hike and experience for you and your dog to enjoy, then head over to Weeks Bayou Nature Trail. Hike the Old Fort Bayou Blueway trails and take some amazing photos of your dog enjoying the great outdoors. If you want to go a step further, you can venture onto the 12 Oaks walking trail and enjoy the scenery with your pup before heading home and take pleasure in some down time. Remember the entire time you are on the trial that your dog needs to stay on leash and be aware of the wildlife that is around you.
