Located thirty minutes north of Lincoln, Valparaiso is a small town with a variety of residents and many dog lovers. The well-maintained homes in the area feature large grassy yards perfect for Fido, and you can easily walk around town with your pup on a leash.
If you need a place for Fido to stretch his legs, head over to Tornado Park. This park offers wide open spaces where your pooch can romp and roll in the grass or relax under the picnic shelter with a bottle of water. The kids can play a game of tennis or basketball or hang out on the playground while you walk laps around the park.
Although there are no veterinarian clinics in Valparaiso, you can travel about 20 minutes in any directions and find a qualified clinic for routine appointments and emergency care. You will also need to travel out of town to purchase pup supplies and food. About 45 minutes east of town in Omaha, you can check out Long Dog, Fat Cat and find a variety of supplies to spoil your pup.
If you are searching for a quaint town with friendly neighbors and lots of space for your pooch to roam, Valparaiso is an excellent area in rural Nebraska.
Hiking with your pup is healthy and fun when you head out to the Oak Creek Trail. Drive west on Main Road and you will find the trailhead where you can park your car in the convenient lot and begin your adventure. The trail travels across North Oak Creek and you and Fido will enjoy the scenery on a cool afternoon. You can hike 20 miles north toward the town of Brainard where you will see prairie lands, open farmland, and oak woodlands. There are restrooms available in Brainard and you can refill your water bottles. The trail is also equestrian friendly, so make sure to keep your pup on his leash.
The town of Raymond is about 10 miles south of Valparaiso and features a pooch-friendly campground where you can spend time with Fido and the family. Branched Oak SRA Campground offers over 300 sites for both primitive and RV camping. You and your pup can stroll around the lake and go fishing, or take your pooch out in one of the rental boats. Hiking through the area is also fun and you will often see other pups and their parents enjoying nature. You will need to keep Fido on his leash and be sure to bring doggie waste bags to clean up.
The Red Tail Lake State Wildlife area is about 10 miles west of Valparaiso in Dwight. If you are looking for some peace and quiet while you walk through the forest, Fido will love sniffing the trees and local plants. The trails are clearly marked and you will be able to see the lake and watch the wildlife while your pup rolls in the prairie grass. You will often see other hikers out enjoying the scenery, and you can even hike during the winter months on the well-defined trails. Be sure to keep your pup on his leash and dispose of trash in the convenient receptacles.
Only 15 miles southwest of town, the Oak Glen Wildlife Management Area is a great place to walk Fido in the Seward. This 633-acre area of land is great for exploring nature and the local wildlife. You will even see cattle grazing on the grassland and listening to songbirds will create a peaceful atmosphere to walk. You can also take your pup on the Plum Creek Trail where you can hike through three miles of open fields and woodlands. The trail follows along Plum Creek and there is a playground at the park where the kids can play. Fido will enjoy crossing over the bridges and sniffing the flowers along the path while you enjoy a sunny afternoon.
Pups and their parents who enjoy camping will love the Pawnee SRA Campground in the Pawnee Lake neighborhood of Lincoln.
