Tappan is a hamlet 12 miles north of New York City in Orangetown, New York that got its name from the Indian word for "cold water." While the water around Tappan may be cold, it is beautiful to look at, and ideal for long walks along the water with your best four-legged friend beside you. Tappan has a population of fewer than 7,000 people, but it has an incredibly rich history that includes George Washington having had his headquarters there in 1780. Much of the town is dedicated to showcasing its historical landmarks, and while it maintains its authenticity, it also manages to keep up with the times, including being a great place to live if you're a dog owner!

The '76 House in Tappan dates back hundreds of years to the Revolutionary War and is the oldest tavern in New York. Not only is The '76 House historically important, but it also serves excellent food and drinks, and it has outdoor seating that is dog-friendly. You can enjoy dishes like their Yankee pot roast or roasted Amish chicken in the same restaurant George Washington once sat while your dog waits eagerly at your side for a scrap or two. Tappan is a dog-friendly place that you'll want to add to your must-visit list right away!
