Dog Areas in Wister

2 Parks
1 Trail

Wister is located about 45 minutes south of Fort Smith and features a Fido-friendly small-town atmosphere. Large open areas all over town are perfect for walking with your pup while doing errands or just enjoying the fresh air. Since the town is small, you will need to travel a few miles north to the town of Poteau for veterinarian care. Keeping your pooch healthy and happy is easy when you can take advantage of parks and fields in town.

If you are looking for a fun adventure, take your pup on the Old Frisco Trail. You can access the trail from Chickasaw Avenue, and travel north about five miles to Poteau. The trail follows along an old railroad line and offers scenic views. You will cross over wooden trestles along the way, but most of the trail is flat and easy to hike. As you pass by Cavanal Lake, you can stop for a break or go a bit further up to Lake Wister. There is convenient parking at the PARC field on Hwy 271.

Pups who love running around will enjoy the rural community of Wister. There are plenty of open spaces where families can walk with Fido, and large parks and campgrounds will help keep residents and visitors entertained.

You can spend time strolling with Fido around the edge of the water, or stop at the boat launch and go out in a canoe or paddleboat. If the kids love camping, set up a tent at the campground and enjoy the activities and playground on warm summer days. Fido can spend time in the park on a leash, and you will need to provide your own doggie waste bags. If you love nature and exploring hiking trails, this park is perfect for you and your pooch.
