South Wister
The best place in Wister to take the family for some exercise is the Lake Wister State Park. The park is part of the Ouachita National Forest and offers camping and a huge lake. You can spend time strolling with Fido around the edge of the water, or stop at the boat launch and go out in a canoe or paddleboat. If the kids love camping, set up a tent at the campground and enjoy the activities and playground on warm summer days. Fido can spend time in the park on a leash, and you will need to provide your own doggie waste bags. If you love nature and exploring hiking trails, this park is perfect for you and your pooch.

North Broadway St/ Central St
Another park in Poteau is the Bill J Barber Park which features a playground for the kids and a paved walking trail for you and your pup. The path is about a quarter of a mile, so you and Fido can walk some laps and get some exercise while the kids play. You can also invite friends and their furry family members to join you at the picnic pavilion for some burgers and hot dogs. The grassy field will be puptacular with all the dogs, just be sure to bring some doggie waste bags. Clean restrooms and a water fountain are also available at the park.

City Center
In the City Center of Poteau, families visiting from Wister can enjoy the Twyman Park and Pond. The well-maintained area is perfect for a lazy afternoon spent fishing in the pond or watching the ducks and geese. You can also spend some time at the Long Lake Resort and RV Park. There are tent and camper sites, and you can stroll with Fido on a leash and admire a variety of plants, and even some buffalo grazing in the fields. The friendly staff is helpful, and there is plenty of space for your pup to wander around and socialize with other dogs in the area.

East Heavener
About twelve miles southeast of Wister, the Heavener Runestone Park is a great place to spend some time with your pup. The beautiful landscaping is wonderful for a wedding or taking pictures with you and Fido. The peaceful atmosphere is perfect when you need to get away and relax from the stress of a busy day. You can walk along the path and admire the gardens, or take a break in one of the picnic shelters. There is a playground for the kids, and restrooms are convenient to the parking lot. There is even a small gift shop where you can buy souvenirs from the park.
West Poteau
In interesting destination in West Poteau is Cavanal – the World’s Highest Hill on County Road D1340. Pack up the pup and the kids and drive up to the viewpoint where you can walk around with your pooch and admire the views over the valley. You will see a variety of wildlife, so be sure to keep Fido on a leash. If you travel up the hill in the morning, you can enjoy a beautiful sunrise while your pup gets some exercise. Pack a snack and sit at one of the shaded picnic pavilions before heading back down the winding road.
