Glen Allen is an unincorporated community in Henrico County, Virginia. Originally called "Mountain Road Crossing", the settlement came to be known as Glen Allen, taking its name from the homestead of a local landowner, Mrs. Benjamin Allen. Once an area of mostly rural farmland, Glen Allen is now a growing suburb of Richmond.
The town has lots of leafy streets for you and the pooch to ramble around, and it also has a massive shopping mall – Virginia Center Commons – should you feel the need for a spot of retail therapy! Glen Allen must be doing something right because it was featured in both the 2007 and 2009 editions of Money Magazine's "Top 100 Places to Live”.
The town is also home to the Meadow Farm Museum, an 1860 living history farm site where costumed interpreters re-enact the lives of Dr. John Mosby Sheppard, the owner of Meadow Farm, and his family.
If you’re planning on extending your stay in Glen Allen, there are plenty of local pet-friendly hotels in the area. Extended Stay America Richmond West End accepts two pets of any size for an additional fee of $25 per pet, per night, and Aloft Richmond West allows pets of any size for no additional fee.
There’s plenty for you and the pooch to do throughout the 47 acres of forest, fields, trails, and lakes that make up the Dude Ranch Member Park. There are a number of playfields (15,000 sq. ft in all) for your doggie to run off-leash. Some of them have 4-foot fences, others have 6-foot fences, but what they all have in common is plenty of wide-open space for doggie to run! You and the pooch can also have a wander around the boutique, where you’ll find a variety of unique gifts for pets, including toys, special leashes and collars, and Super Premium Dog foods, too!

There is a playground for the kids, a pond where they can feed the ducks, a history visitor center, and a working farm that dates back to the Civil War era. General Sheppard Crump Memorial Park Loop Trail is a 1.6-mile trail that takes you through a forest where you’ll see woodpeckers, gray squirrels, and hear the call of Carolina wrens. As well as ducks, the nearby pond is also home to Canada geese, mallards, and great blue herons. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on-leash.
