Introduction
Bob the Builder Inspired Dog Names in Pop Culture
If you are a fan of classic children's shows and movies, then you have most likely heard of Percy the dog. Percy is the lovable little grey Pug in Disney's Pocahontas. When we first see Percy, he is the spoiled and pompous pet of Ratcliffe, the money hungry man who is out to take the land from the Indians. Although Percy belongs to Ratcliffe, he is actually cared for by Wiggins, who is Ratcliffe's servant. From the very get go, it is easy to see that Percy is portrayed precisely how we tend to picture Pugs; as perfect little lap dogs who love attention and pampering. Things change quickly for Percy, however, once he steps paw into the world of Pocahontas.
Through a whirlwind of events, one of which being when Percy is chased around by Meeko (Pocahontas's raccoon), Percy ends up leaving the care of Wiggins and Ratcliffe. He then joins Pocahontas, John Smith, Flit (the hummingbird), and Meeko as they explore the wilderness together. Eventually, the fun comes to an end when John is accused of killing one of the Indian men. Of course, this is not true and Pocahontas goes to great lengths to save John's life. At the end of the film, we see that Percy has decided to remain behind in the Indian village with Pocahontas as opposed to going back to England with John Smith. The reasoning behind this is most likely due to the fact that Percy found a new loyalty to his friends, Meeko and Pocahontas, while also realizing that he truly enjoyed the freedom of being with the Indians. Although his previous life was full of luxury (bubble baths and biscuits on a carousel) it was void of what every dog truly longs for in their life; which is love from their owners.
The Pug breed is known for being charming, slightly mischievous, and very loving. According to the AKC, Pugs are so loving that they actually "live to love and be loved in return". With such a description as this, it is easy to see why Percy the Pug wouldn't have wanted to carry on living the life that he had with Ratcliffe; even though he was treated like a royal, it wasn't fulfilling for the dog's typical nature. If you have a Pug, whether boy or girl, then perhaps you will find the name of Percy to be an excellent fit for them.
