At times, the most encouraging and inspirational stories we hear have to do with the underdog (literally in this case) picking themselves back up in order to move towards victory. Rupee, a little Indian dog with a big heart, is the perfect example of a classic heartwarming tale; and in fact became a record setter in the process. Known as the first officially recorded dog to ever reach Mount Everest, Rupee successfully made the 17,000 foot (5,364 meter) hike to base camp in 2013. Along with his beloved owner, Joanne Lefson, Rupee found a new purpose for his life and accomplished something that no other dog at the time could boast of.

When Joanna first stumbled upon Rupee in Ladakh, Northern India, he was an 8-month old puppy just struggling to stay alive within the mounds of a garbage dump. According to Joanne, the small dog was starving and could barely walk a few feet before falling down exhausted. She said that he "couldn't have had more than an hour to live". However, Rupee was a fighter and when Joanne took him under her wing (after her faithful traveling companion, Oscar, passed away) he began to recover under lots of love and a high protein diet of boiled eggs and rice. Not long after, once Rupee had reached a full recovery, Joanne decided that she would take her new-found friend with her on the trip that had originally been planned for Oscar; the ascent to Mount Everest's base camp.

Such a big expedition requires a lot of planning and although Joanne knew that Rupee possessed enough heart to accomplish the mission, she was a bit concerned about his physical ability. So, she took Rupee to the vet in order to get a diagnosis on his health and capability. The vet had full confidence that due to Rupee being born in the Himalayas that he would have no risk of altitude sickness; especially since the pair were just heading to the base camp of Everest. With this clear bill of health, Rupee and Joanne set off to conquer this challenge. When they reached the mountain, Rupee immediately fell in love with the snow and spent a good majority of time romping around and playing in it.

It took about ten days of enduring snow delays, mudslides, and many other trials the mountain had in store before Rupee and his owner reached the base camp in triumph. There is no doubt that Joanne felt a huge amount of pride when she looked at her little rescue dog and what he had accomplished. Even though she had hired an extra porter to carry Rupee just in case he got tired, there was no need to worry as the brave resuce dog took to the challenge like a pro and had the time of his life doing so!
