Hobbes

Hobbes is one of the title characters of the popular newspaper comic strip Calvin and Hobbes. He is named after 17th-century philosopher Thomas Hobbes and is somewhat based on author Bill Watterson’s own pet cat. Hobbes displays his feline instincts by being playful and pouncing on his best friend Calvin whenever he comes home from school. He is also an avid fan of seafood, particularly tuna and salmon.

To Calvin, Hobbes is a real tiger; to everyone else, he is just a stuffed toy. Throughout its run from 1985 to 1995, the strip revolved around the two main characters’ relationship and antics, with Hobbes’ reality often being called into question.

Since Calvin is the only one who can see that Hobbes is alive, readers have naturally come up with a couple of theories. Some believe that he is a product of Calvin's imagination, while others think that he is a plushie that only springs to life in Calvin’s presence. In The Calvin and Hobbes Tenth Anniversary Book, however, Watterson explained that Hobbes is “more about the subjective nature of reality than dolls coming to life.” Hobbes’ reality, therefore, is not set in stone and is open to interpretation.

Real tiger or not, Hobbes is portrayed as having more common sense than Calvin and serving as his voice of reason. Though he follows Calvin on his adventures, Hobbes usually questions or makes wry comments about the scrappy boy’s behavior and impulsiveness.

Calvin and Hobbes is one of the most beloved comic strips of all time. Yet despite its popularity, there is virtually no official merchandise due to Watterson’s insistence that comic strips should stand on their own as an art form. And even though the strip’s run ended decades ago, fans can still enjoy it through printed books and online.
