Fans of classic movies need no introduction to Scarlett O’Hara, the leading lady of Gone With the Wind. Released in 1939, Gone with the Wind is based on the bestselling novel by Margaret Mitchell and is one of the most successful films of all time. It follows the life of Scarlett O’Hara, a spoiled and headstrong Southern belle whom audiences both love and hate.
The eldest daughter of plantation owners, Scarlett is used to being the center of attention and having what she wants, but her life is turned upside down when the Civil War starts. Determined to resume her luxurious lifestyle and lift her family out of poverty, Scarlett marries her sister’s wealthy beau and goes into business—an uncommon move for a woman of her class in 1860s America.
Scarlett isn’t your typical Southern belle; she goes after what she wants and can be selfish and manipulative in doing so. This is probably most evident in her quest to resurrect her family’s plantation as well as her romantic relationships, wherein she marries for either revenge or money. Love her or hate her, Scarlett O’Hara is definitely one of the most colorful characters in film!
One famous feline who shares the same name as Ms. O’Hara is Scarlett the hero cat, who attracted worldwide attention after a fire broke out in an abandoned Brooklyn garage in 1996. The courageous calico rescued her five kittens from the burning building, heading into the blaze five times as she could only carry one out at a time.
Scarlett and her babies were brought to the North Shore Animal League where they were treated for burns and smoke inhalation. With mentions from CNN and Oprah Winfrey, the family received more than a thousand adoption offers. The four surviving kittens were eventually adopted in pairs, while Scarlett found her forever home with writer Karen Wellen.
Scarlett passed away in 2008 after battling several health issues. Reuters paid tribute to the heroic feline by putting her image up on a screen in Times Square. Even to this day, Scarlett’s memory lives on. North Shore created an award in her honor called the Scarlett Award for Animal Heroism, and Karen still regularly updates her Facebook page. Books have also been written about Scarlett, including Scarlett Saves Her Family and Scarlett the Cat to the Rescue: Fire Hero.Classic Movie Inspired Cat Name Considerations
With so many possibilities, choosing a classic movie inspired name for your furbaby can be overwhelming. To help you narrow it down, ask yourself the following questions: Do you have a favorite film or character? What is your cat’s personality like and do they remind you of any classic movie characters? Does your cat have a physical feature that resembles a certain classic movie character?
Don’t worry if you can’t come up with answers to these questions. Considering your cat’s temperament, breed, or color can help you make a decision, but there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to naming your furkiddo. You don’t even have to be a film buff to name your cat after a classic movie character. Ultimately, you want to choose a moniker that sounds good to you.
Take some time selecting a classic movie inspired name for your kitty. You’re going to be saying it a lot for the next 10 years or so!
