Oscar was a therapy cat from Rhode Island who achieved international fame in 2007 after geriatrician Dr. David Dosa wrote an essay about him in The New England Journal of Medicine. For the most part, the long-haired tabby looked and acted like an ordinary cat. Adopted as a kitten by staff members of Steere House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Oscar liked to eat, sleep, make his rounds, and generally keep to himself.
It wasn’t long before staff members and Dr. Dosa noticed that there was something very special about Oscar—he could sense when residents were at the end of life. About two to four hours before someone might pass away, Oscar would enter the room, jump on the windowsill, and stay with them until the very end. Sometimes he would jump on the bed and curl up next to the patient, providing companionship to those who would have otherwise died alone. In cases where a patient still has family, Oscar’s ability to predict their passing has allowed staff to notify their family members.
Oscar has been featured or referenced in various media outlets, including news programs, newspapers, and TV shows such as The Simpsons and Saturday Night Live. In one episode of Jeopardy!, he was the $1,200 question for one of the categories. Dr. Dosa has given lectures around the country about Oscar and has written a book about him as well. Making Rounds with Oscar: The Extraordinary Gift of an Ordinary Cat not only became a bestseller but has also become required reading in many gerontology programs nationwide.
In February 2022, Oscar passed away after a short illness. The extraordinary cat, who provided comfort and companionship to the nursing home’s residents, staff, and families, was 17 years old.
Cat Names That Start With O Considerations
A lot of the O names on this list will fit just about any cat regardless of their breed, color, or temperament. But some of them are more suitable for certain felines; for example, Opal would be a better match for a white cat, and you most likely wouldn’t name a black moggy Orange.
There are also names that are implicitly associated with certain characteristics. Odin, one of the principal gods in Norse mythology, evokes a sense of power and wisdom, making it a good choice for an alpha male cat. Orchid, a plant known for its beautiful and delicate flowers, would suit a female cat with the same traits.
And though some names are not always automatically linked to particular traits, they have meanings as well. If you want to put some extra thought into naming your cat, consider their personality and the root meaning of a specific name. For example, Orlee means “golden princess” and would be great for a regal feline.
On the other hand, you can just go with something fun and cute, like the food names Omelet and Oolong. Ultimately, the name you choose will depend on what sounds good to you. So take a look at this list of cat names that start with O and have fun naming your feline companion!
