Cat Names that Start with S in Pop Culture
It’s possible that every generation alive in the US knows Sylvester, as he first appeared on television in 1939 and is still on tv to this day. He also goes by Putty Tat, and Sylvester James Pussycat Senior. This tuxedo cat is a beloved character in the Loonie Tunes and Merrie Melodies cartoons, often seen chasing Tweety Bird, Speedy Gonzales, or Hippity Hopper, a baby kangaroo that he constantly confuses for a giant mouse.
Sylvester and Tweety became one of the most well-known pairings in Looney Tunes, next to Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck. Some of their cartoons have even won or were nominated for Academy Awards. Sylvester himself appeared in 103 cartoons, as well as comic books, video games, and cameo appearances in shows and movies like Robot Chicken and Space Jam.
Although Sylvester is usually portrayed as the antagonist in Looney Tunes cartoons, he shows incredible tenacity and pride. Sometimes he’s a scaredy-cat, but often he’s a trickster. He relentlessly chases Tweety and is continuously outfoxed, leaving Sylvester bewildered and exasperated. He usually gets clobbered by his owner, Granny, or Hector the Bulldog before he is about to eat Tweety. Sylvester also has a son, Sylvester Junior, who he tries to teach how to catch mice. He’s known for his endearing and sloppy lisp, which is emphasized by his catchphrase “sufferin’ succotash!” One of his other traits is sticking his tongue out and going on long rambling rants, ending in “sakes!”
The name Sylvester, or Silvester, comes from the Latin adjective silvestris, meaning wooded or wild. Sylvester the cartoon cat is named after Felis silvestris, the scientific name for the European wildcat. Although no one is sure exactly what breed Sylvester is, it’s possible he’s a Maine Coon, Turkish Angora, or Norwegian Forest Cat. All of these cats can have tuxedo coats, are larger in size, and are athletic and playful, just like Sylvester! He’s also known for his red nose which can happen to cats from excitement or stress. This makes sense, after seeing his antics. Does your feline sound like Sylvester’s doppelgänger?
Overall, Sylvester is tough, tenacious, and has a strong prey drive. He’s also playful and mischievous. If your cat shares any of these personality traits with Sylvester, it could be an excellent name choice. If you have a bird named Tweety, a cat named Sylvester would make the pair complete. Just make sure you keep Tweety out of Sylvester’s reach!
Cat Names that Start with S Considerations
In ancient times the letter "S" used to appear like a horizontal wavy W that was used to represent the bow of an archer. An S name could be a great option for your furry little hunter. Of course, there are tons of different reasons a pet parent would choose the letter S as a theme for their new cat’s name.
Often pet-parents specifically choose the letter "S" because it has a symbolic meaning to them. It could be a nod to a previous pet. Maybe you want to create an alliteration with your last name (Sassy Smith has a great ring to it!). Or, if everyone in your family has a name beginning with "S", surely you don’t want your new kitty to feel left out!
Pet parents could also choose a name starting with "S" because they simply like the way it sounds. A recent study found that the way a word sounds can cause an emotional response, something that many people notice in poetry and music. The letter "S" is a gentle-sounding consonant that often makes people think of words like soft, serenity, spirit, or sunny. When combined with a consonant, it can also sound powerful like striking, strong, skilled, or smart.
So, is your cat snuggly or sassy? Silly, or sweet? When choosing a name, your new cat’s personality is a factor to consider. Fur-tunately, there are plenty of "S" names that can suit any personality.
