Introduction
Dog Names Ending in 'on' in Pop Culture
Stories of adventure and beloved heroes have been fan favorites long before television even became popular. A wonderful example of this can be found within a radio show that was broadcast during the 1940's with its final show being in the year 1955. This radio hit was known as "Challenge of the Yukon" and was aired in only 15 minute episodes on the Detroit radio station WXYZ. It featured tails of the heroic Sergeant Preston and his ever faithful Malamute, Yukon King. In 1951 the title of the show was changed to "Sergeant Preston of the Yukon" but the beloved stories of adventure remained the same and just as popular. The plot consisted of Sergeant Preston fighting crime from murder to thievery and through it all, his dog Yukon King was ever at his side; in fact, Yukon was so popular that he was dubbed as a "wonder dog". In 1955 Sergeant Preston and Yukon King went on to hit the big screen; they were even in color when many of the other TV shows on air were still in black and white! As can be imagined, this brought Yukon King to even higher heights as a wonder dog and people everywhere loved him.
Yukon King (who was played by the Alaskan Malamute King) was a solid and swift character that often did more work in bringing down the bad guys than the Sergeant himself did. Yukon King was the lead dog for Preston's sled team and had an incredible instinct for sensing criminals. This most likely stemmed from the fact that Yukon King was raised by a mother wolf from puppyhood and his own mother was part wolf. So even though it is never stated whether Yukon King is meant to be a Husky or a Malamute, there is no doubt that wolf blood is what makes him all the more fearless and wonder dog material. Sergeant Preston met his best friend when Yukon King and his wolf mother were in the middle of being attacked by a lynx. The Sergeant arrived just in time and saved Yukon King, taking him to be his own lead dog and raising him with much love. Thanks to his immense talent and the role that he played, King the Alaskan Malamute received star billing right after Preston, and that's a pretty impressive feat, to say the least. King retired and lived well into the 1960's and is forever remembered as a wonderful, loyal, and loving dog.
