Introduction
Dog Names Meaning Midnight in Pop Culture
Although Banana Joe's name does not actually mean "midnight" he is most certainly a dog that bears a gorgeous coat, dark as night. This adorably named Affenpinscher was dubbed "Best in Show" at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show on a Tuesday night in February of 2013. While there are many dogs who have claimed that title in the past, Banana Joe is a rare case as he is the very first Affenpinscher to win the title. At the time of the competition, Banana Joe was against six other dogs, one of which was a Portuguese Water Dog just like President Obama's dog, Bo!
At the age of five when he won his title, Banana Joe (fondly known as "Joey" to his handler, Ernesto Lara) was a dog that truly stunned the judges. They had never before seen a dog with his stature and muscle tone. His features and overall make was the perfect model for his breed. Lara stated that winning the event wasn't too difficult for Joey, simply because he is an incredibly smart dog who knows how to give a show to the crowd. With a comic-seriousness that captured everyone's hearts, Banana Joe stole the spotlight and held it, all the way to the winner's circle.
Because of his age, (Joey was turning 6 the very next month) the win was going to be his last as Banana Joe decided to head into retirement. Although this might be a disappointment to those who enjoyed watching the dog, it seems to be a common practice for winners of the Westminster competition to do; ending with a high note for their career. After retirement, Banana Joe would head back to his homeland in the Netherlands where he was born. Without a doubt, this would be the ultimate retirement move, as Banana Joe would be home once again.
Although not every Affenpinscher may be a show dog, if you own one, then you most likely know how wonderful the breed may be; not to mention deserving of an award! These little dogs are known for being fearless, fun, and completely confident in themselves. All of these traits, of course, make an excellent show dog, but they also show how wonderful a family dog this breed can be. As Joey's handler says, you simply don't "train these dogs" but you "befriend them". If you own an Affenpinscher, then perhaps the name "Joey" to represent our spotlight dog would be a good title to consider.
Dog Name Meaning Midnight Considerations
When it comes to deciding whether or not a midnight themed name is right for your dog, the biggest factors will be coloring and personality. Additionally, the time of day that your dog was born or perhaps the time of day that you found them, could also be excellent representations of the midnight hour. For instance, if you have a dog that doesn't bear a black coat but was born at midnight, a couple of names that would be excellent to consider would be "Midnight" itself, the African name "Ajambo" (meaning born in the evening), or "Nuru" (Swahili for "born at night"). On the side of naming your dog based on color and breed, an ideal combo would be a black Scottish Terrier who could bear the name "Cerin" if male and "Khiara" if female. Both names have similar meanings of "little dark one/small and dark".
Even though it may not be as obvious, personality can play a part in choosing a midnight themed name as well! The best example of this would be a sleepy dog that loves to cuddle, or a wild exuberant dog that seems to come alive at night. Respectfully, the names "Somnus" or "Nyx" would fit well.
