Introduction
Dog Names that Start with Po in Pop Culture
For those who love a good fairy tail story, there is no doubt that you will love the little dog, Pooka, from the movie Anastasia. Very little is known about the cute pup's past, but it is clear that he was one of the first friends that Anastasia acquired after she was sent to the orphanage following the tragic event that befell her family. Pooka himself was most likely abandoned or lost following his meeting Anya. Their first encounter comes to fruition when Anya has left the orphanage as an adult and is trying to decide what to do; go to the fish market as she was told, or try to find her family on her own. In asking for a sign, the little Pooka suddenly appears from behind a fallen tree and Anya takes that as the answer she is looking for. Pooka warms up to her immediately and they set out to try and find Anya's family. Throughout the movie, Pooka is by her side. Helping his master through nightmares and horrible attacks from the man who haunts her dreams, there is no doubt that this little dog is loyal to the core. In the end, he joins Anya and her new found love as they travel the world together in search of adventures.
A few interesting facts about this adorable movie pup, is that his name "Pooka" doesn't actually have a meaning in the Russian language. So in the Russian dub of the film, his name is changed to "Pushok" which fittingly means "fluffy". This name is perfect considering how fluffy little Pooka looks, but the pup's appearance actually goes a bit farther than most people realize. In the real story of Anastasia, the princess's own dog, Jimmy, did not survive the attacks; however, her brother's dog, Joy, did. Because of this, there is some speculation that Pooka is actually supposed to be a representation of either Joy or Anastasia's little brother Alexi (who owned Joy). This could possibly explain why Pooka seemed to know Anya right when he first met her. Whatever the real inspiration may be behind the creation of Pooka, there is no doubt that this sweet little dog brings so much life and warmth to the film. He is a constant companion to Anya when she needs a friend and despite his small size, Pooka does his best to protect his master from all the dangers that surround her. And that is a true friend!
