Introduction
Dog Names that Start with Sc in Pop Culture
In the year 1969, an animation studio by the name of Hanna-Barbera released a TV series that followed the wild adventures of a group of teens and their loveable dog, Scoobert Scooby Dooby Doo; otherwise known as just Scooby Doo. Full of laughs and interesting mysteries to solve, the show featuring Scooby Doo went on to become multiple different movies, both animated and live action. Scooby's best friend in the gang is Shaggy, who is a lanky and rather laughable character who thoroughly enjoys snacks more than anything else in life. The friends are always getting in trouble while out on a case because they sneak off to find the nearest goodies.
Scooby is based on the designer, Iwo Takamoto's, perceptions of his friend's Great Dane. This is easy to see in Scooby's features, such as long legs, a large head, stick straight tail that is rather long, and floppy ears. The Great Dane is also known for being one of the largest dog breeds, and this is carried over to Scooby Doo as well. Takamoto made sure to get as many details right for his cartoon canine as possible, so before fully designing Scooby, Takamoto consulted with a Great Dane breeder to pinpoint the most predominant features of the breed. From his brown pelt to his spots and dark nose, Scooby represents the Great Dane fairly well, even down to his personality, which we will touch on in just a moment. The only liberty that Takamoto took with Scooby was to make his animation a bit easier with only one paw pad on each foot, giving him opposable thumbs to help aid in some of the activities he does, and allowing him to have limited speech (starting each word with an "r" sound to mimic how a dog may speak if they actually could).
As far as personality goes, let's first touch on the main traits of the Great Dane. According to the AKC, this breed is friendly, patient, and dependable. They are an easy-going dog breed but due to their large size and nature, the Great Dane can be quite formidable and makes an excellent guard dog for the home. All of these traits line up really well with Scooby Doo because he is a faithful friend, kind to everyone (except the bad guys), and loves spending time with his friends enjoying some snacks. He is a bit more of a scaredy-cat than perhaps a normal Great Dane, but we'll cut him some slack since he does deal with scary people all the time!
