Even though our spotlight pup of the day won't be riding into the west anytime soon, he most definitely is on his way to wrangling up some bad guys! Wrangler the Yellow Lab is a pup that has been featured on the Today show a couple of times in the past thanks to his work as a seeing-eye dog. Raised and trained from puppyhood by his trainer, Saxon Eastman, Wrangler was so good at his job that at just a little over one year old he is moving on from his work as a guide dog and onto bigger and better things.

A couple of years ago, Wrangler went through an evaluation to determine whether or not he would be fit for detection work. He passed and was officially accepted into the Connecticut State detection dog program and is now working on his training to become the best detection dog he can be! Although he will undoubtedly be missed in the guide department, Wrangler truly seems to be better suited for detection missions, and his name is a perfect fit for the gig. Whether he is sniffing out bombs or chasing down the bad guys, there is no doubt that Wrangler will be happy wrangling up those who would do harm to others.

When Wrangler was a seeing-eye dog, he worked with Bill Stevens for a while, who was a professor of music at Santa Clara University. Wrangler's primary duties were to walk back and forth with the professor from his different classes, as well as the pool and faculty meetings. Stevens truly enjoyed Wrangler's company and even played with the idea of having Wrangler up on stage with him while he performed; as he was an avid piano player. This undoubtedly would have been a treat for both Wrangler and all who watched the performance!

Guide dogs and detection dogs are truly wonderful gifts to society. Like Wrangler, there are dogs all over that take these positions and help to comfort and aid those who need it most. Thanks to dogs like Wrangler, people with disabilities are able to live a more normal life, and do so with a wonderful dog by their side!
