Introduction
English Cocker Spaniel Dog Names in Pop Culture
In popular culture the Cocker Spaniel is a prevelant breed amongst celebrities. However, there are specific differences between the types of Cocker Spaniel. The English Cocker Spaniel is not the same as the American Cocker Spaniel, and one of the key differences is size. The American Cocker Spaniel is bred from the English, but it is smaller, with a shorter muzzle.
The English Cocker Spaniel is known to be a gun or sporting dog; in the past a lot of people preferred this version of the Cocker Spaniel and in 1935, the English Cocker Spaniel Club of America was formed. The American Kennel Club didn’t recognize the English Cocker Spaniel and American Cocker Spaniel as separate breeds until 1946.
The spotlight name for this guide is Arthur. The name Arthur is of Welsh origin and it means bear. Being a sporting breed of dog, the name suits the English Cocker Spaniel nicely. Arthur is the name of revered singer Sir Elton John’s English Cocker Spaniel, who sadly passed away in March 2018. Arthur attended many red-carpet events and although Sir Elton is known to have owned many dogs, he is said to have been especially attached to Arthur.
Arthur made news in 2014 when he attended Sir Elton John’s wedding to David Furnish, as the best man/dog. As you can tell, the English Cocker Spaniel is certainly a lovable, intelligent and loyal breed. Arthur also received credits on Sir Elton's album, The Captain and the Kid, released in 2006.
An English Cocker Spaniel is also a suitable pet for a future king and queen. Lupo belongs to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, in the United Kingdom. He is said to have been bred from Ella, an English Cocker Spaniel belonging to the parents of the Duchess, Michael and Carole Middleton. Lupo is an Italian word, meaning wolf - a great name!
English Cocker Spaniels also make excellent show dogs. In 1996, Albert (registered as Canigou Cambrai) won Best in Show, at the United Kingdom’s famous dog show, Crufts. Victorian British Poet, Elizabeth Barrett Browning owned an English Cocker Spaniel named, Flush. This pooch was the subject of Flush: A Biography, published in 1933 by Virginia Woolf.
English Cocker Spaniel Dog Name Considerations
When choosing a name for your pooch, you should do your research to ensure you pick a name that suits your individual dog, as our pets have their own personality. For the English Cocker Spaniel that is sweet and loving, how about Cadbury, Babykins, Charmer, or Angel? You might also choose a name based on color, so names like Biscuit or Caramel can be great for the dog with the light-brown colored coat.
English Cocker Spaniels are known to be energetic. Blaze could be just the fit in this case. Consider Barker, if your pooch is of the noisy type. Appearance is another consideration to make when naming your furry addition. English Cocker Spaniels are known for their long, wavy coats, so a name like Rags would be great.
If you still can’t decide after looking through the list below, why not make your own list, or discuss some of your preferred names with family and friends? Try to choose a name that matches your dog in some way; a forever name, that you can imagine yourself calling to your dog when outside. Your new best friend could even help you to decide – shout out a couple of names and see if your four-legged friend responds.
