Introduction
Gnomeo and Juliet Inspired Dog Names in Pop Culture
About two years ago, an article was written about the discovery of a Miniature Schnauzer and an orange tabby cat huddled together under a car in California. Upon being taken to the Chula Vista Animal Care Facility, Romeo and Juliet made it very clear that they had no intention of being separated. Sticking as close together as they physically could, Romeo and Juliet touched the hearts of those at the shelter and according to the administration of the shelter, Romeo and Juliet were considered a "bonded pair"; meaning that they were animals who would most likely physically and behaviorally deteriorate if they were taken away from each other. This assumption was confirmed when Romeo and Juliet were briefly separated into different areas of the facility (as cats and dogs usually are) and Romeo's health began to decline. He became depressed, stopped eating, and his fur began to dull. Many different things were attempted to bring the little cat back to a healthy state, but nothing worked, aside from reuniting him with his best friend. The staff decided to bring Juliet back to Romeo and the moment the tabby cat saw her, he began to show some more enthusiasm for life.
A special enclosure was set up for the odd pair and they happily stayed there together. At the time, Romeo and Juliet were both up for adoption, but only under the condition that they go to their new home together. While this is a rather rare situation, there is no doubt that the bond between these two animals is really special. It shows just how much love can span the distance between those who are different. Although Romeo and Juliet of the original story did not have a happy ending, it is truly wonderful to know that the pet versions will be able to have a happy and full life together.
