Introduction

For many people, Halloween is the purrfect night to let their hair down and have some fun. This ancient tradition once celebrated in the British Isles has evolved over the centuries into a modern holiday celebrated all over the world.

Cats have often been associated with the scary-but-fun holiday, and the mental picture of a cat on a fence with an arched back silhouetted against the moon is commonly used in today’s Halloween decorations, goody bags, and costumes. Even cakes and cookies are decorated with the iconic image, along with witches, skeletons, skulls, and other Halloween-esque symbols.

Jack

One of the most recognized symbols of Halloween is the jack-o-lantern. This Halloween classic originated in Ireland, where people first used turnips which they carved into ghostly faces and lit from the inside with burning coals. The turnip faces were thought to protect them and their homes from legendary Stingy Jack, an unsavory character said to have made multiple bargains with the devil, whom he then betrayed. The devil, unhappy with Jack, cursed him and ordered him to walk the world for eternity carrying a lit, carved-out turnip with a face.

Over time, the use of a turnip to represent Jack of the Lantern, or Jack O’Lantern, morphed into a potato or other round vegetable and was eventually introduced to America by Irish immigrants. Pumpkins were plentiful in North America and thrifty folk used them to create their own version of the jack-o’lantern by carving scary faces into cored pumpkins and placing lit candles inside. Today, jack o’lanterns grace porches, walks, balconies, and lawns, and they welcome trick-or-treaters hoping for candy and other treats. Some Halloween revelers smash the pumpkin heads, perhaps to symbolically destroy Stingy Jack and his curse once and for all, or just for mischievous fun!

And let's not forget one of the most iconic Halloween characters, Jack Skellington from The Nightmare Before Christmas! This living skeleton who livens up Halloween-Town with his antics every year discovers there are other holidays after a wander in a magical forest. Determined to give Christmas a Halloween spin, he kidnaps Sandy Claws and gets the entire town to pitch in to create the scariest December holiday anyone has ever seen. This book turned movie by Tim Burton has become a beloved family classic, and images and costumes of Jack dominate Halloween night.

These ebony felines have throughout history had a reputation for being the animal form or “familiar” of witches and other sinister, supernatural creatures, including Satan.
