Introduction
Roman Rottweiler Dog Names in Pop Culture
Our spotlight dog for today, Pluto, may perhaps be one of the most iconic cartoon dogs of all time. Created by Walt Disney in 1930 to be an adorable and loving companion for Mickey Mouse and the gang, Pluto is a yellow-orange dog with a long snout, long black ears, a stick thin black tail, and short hair. He wears a green color and carries an ever present goofy grin on his face. Pluto is strictly Mickey's pet although loved by all in the "Sensational Six" (Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy, Daisy, and Pluto himself).
Something that sets this pop culture puppy apart from other cartoon dogs is that he is not anthropomorphic aside from a few facial features. Because of this fact alone, Pluto actually was a pioneer in animation as his movies had to be fueled by physical humor in order to get the point across as opposed to actual dialog. When we first meet the lovable pooch, he is a nameless hound dog who tracks Mickey down when he escapes from prison in The Chain Gang (1930. This is quite different from how we portray this yellow pooch for the rest of his career, but he had to go through one more introductory stage before he would become part of the "Sensational Six". A little over a month after we see the dog chasing down Mickey, he is all of a sudden Minnie Mouse's pet, who ends up coming with them on a picnic. He must have forgotten all about their previous meeting and the picnic brought on a real friendship, because the very next time we lay eyes on the famous pair, the yellow-orange dog is now named Pluto, and is Mickey's pet forever more.
It's wonderful that Pluto was placed in this role and brought on as Mickey's pet as it creates an awesome dynamic within the group; not to mention it is quite funny to see Pluto as the only animal character that doesn't speak or wear clothes in a world where that seems to be the norm. Pluto's name would be absolutely perfect for a Roman Mastiff that was slightly more on the clumsy, lanky, adorable side. With a sweet personality and a very strong sense of loyalty, there is no doubt that the name of Pluto (which actually represents the Greek god, Hades, in the Roman culture) could work well for both a gentle or a fierce dog.
