Family-friendly, thriving, and fantastically located, Erie, CO manages to maintain a small town feel -- even with a population of over 18,000! The city is only twenty minutes from Boulder, and thirty-five minutes from Denver, but the easy commute isn’t the only draw -- Erie is simply a lovely place to live. The town has a strong community spirit, and its citizens are proud and civic-minded -- the town hosts regular clean-up days, farmer’s markets, and even neighborhood block parties! There’s also a small but dedicated arts scene, and regular visual and performance art events take place at the Arts Centre in Old Town.

Erie is also fantastically fur-friendly! You'll find a highly-rated animal hospital right in town, so you won't have to travel for quality vet care. The town also has its own dog park, and the parks system is the pride of Erie -- there’s no shortage of community parks and trails for leashed walks. The city is also surrounded by some of the most gorgeous scenery Colorado has to offer. You and your pooch are also welcome to take part in some of the many dog-friendly outdoor events that take place in summer.

No matter how long or short your stay, you two are sure to sniff out something to do in Erie!

Make no bones about it -- your pooch will love a visit to The Boneyard at Erie’s Reliance Park! The dog run has a whole nine acres of space for your furball to leap about and tire themselves out in. Fitter furry friends will be delighted to know that there’s a doggy agility course made out of logs and boulders for that extra canine cardio fix! You'll also find covered benches for tired owners to take a load off, and bags and water are provided, so all you need to do is bring your pup and prepare to play the day away!

If you and your pooch are looking for somewhere to chow down, look no further than downtown Erie! There’s a couple of furrific eateries in town that cater to canines -- Guacho de Argentina serves up a seriously special, authentic empanada. Sit outside and the wait staff will even put out water for your pup! Echo Brewpub and Pizzeria’s crispy thin crust makes it a local favorite, and the owners welcome wagging tails outside. Afterward, you can burn it all off with a leashed walk around Coal Miners Park. Don't forget to bring plenty of waste bags along with you!

If you and your furry friend like hiking, you’re in luck -- Erie is home to its very own stretch of the Coal Creek Trail! This fourteen-mile trail runs all the way from Superior to Coal Creek Park on Kettel Street. It's pretty pawpular with local dog owners, and it’s easy to see why -- unlike many hikes in the area, there’s only a slight incline, so it’s suitable for everyone from the most athletic animals to the most committed couch pup-tatoes! The views over the creek are beautiful, and there are even bag dispensers along the way. Just remember to bring your own water, and watch out for cyclists!

Erie Community Park doesn’t have a dog run, or even much of a walking trail -- though the quarter-mile paved trail it does have is a pretty good place to stretch all six of your legs. Even so, this 41-acre park is a mutts-visit in summer! Once a month, the town hosts an open-air movie night here, and four-legged film buffs are welcome to join as long as they’re leashed. Non-furry family members might also appreciate the park’s several playgrounds, sports fields, and skate park. Remember to bring your own bags and water, and pass the popcorn!

The Great Bark Dog Park in Lafayette isn’t as large as the one at Reliance Park, but it’s only a ten-minute drive from Erie. If you and your pooch are looking for some variety in your off-leash adventures, it’d be a huge faux paw not to visit! There’s a separate area for small dogs, so your pup can play or socialize be they big or little, and bags and toys are provided. The real draw of Lafayette, though, is Romero’s K9 Club and Tap House on S. Public Road. This pawesome pub allows dogs both inside and out, and there’s even a fenced-in play area out the back!
