Dog Areas in Rensselaer, NY

Located on the west side of the Hudson River, Rensselaer is situated directly opposite Albany. A fun fact about this cozy locale is that it was the first American city to produce aspirin. In days past, this town was divided into three villages: Greenbush, East Albany, and Bath. The city's name came from Kiliaen Van Rensselaer, who was a Dutch diamond merchant who bought 700,000 acres of land on both sides of the Hudson River.

Rensselaer's proximity to Albany means that you're never far from dog-friendly fun! Just outside of the city, on the northeastern side, you'll find an animal hospital in the suburbs to keep your pooch in tip-top shape. For big-city amenities, take a quick trip to Troy, just under 9 miles away. Albany is even closer at just over a mile away.

Even though there aren't many places in Rensselaer where you can stay with your pup, there are plenty of pet-friendly lodging options in Albany. Some of the budget-friendly options include Ramada Plaza Albany, Econo Lodge Albany, and Motel 6 Albany.

Hungry? Head to Selena's Cafe in Rensselaer to grab a quick lunch or a coffee. Dogs are welcome in the outdoor seating area. Then, paw on over to Albany and burn those calories in one of the city's off-leash parks!

This next park is open from dawn till dusk and is located around 8 miles away from Rensselaer. Westland Hills Dog Park requires all pup parents to show proof of their dogs' current vaccinations. Owners have to stay with their dogs inside the fenced area at all times. Dogs have to be leashed when they are outside of the designated off-leash area; this rule is strictly enforced. If you decide to play here, you should bring water and poop baggies with you since they're not provided in the park. When it rains, the park tends to get very muddy, so keep that in mind.

Washington Park is the closest park to Rensselaer -- it's ruffly 3 miles away, across the Hudson River. Even though this park officially requires doggies to be on a leash, it is common practice for locals to let their pooches run freely. You'll have to be careful, though, since there is no fencing. Make sure your dog has good recall skills -- busy roads also cut through the park, and you wouldn't want your pooch playing in traffic! A water fountain is only available in the summer, so bring water if you're visiting in winter. You are required to pick up after your dog and to make sure your pup plays well with other doggos in the park.
