Alpine

Grab Fido and head to the Sunset Trail in Alpine which is only eleven miles out of Descanso. This beautiful trail is 3.2-miles long with an out and back route type. The trail is great for beginner hikers, or anyone just looking for a leisure day, since the trail is easy to hike and has plenty of shade while you walk it. While hiking, you will pass through some pawsome meadows and be surrounded by pine trees. You will come across a lake known as the Water-of-the-Woods while hiking, which is a perfect spot for you and your pup to stop and relax before heading home.

Alpine Heights

Wrights Field is a 230-acre grassland that is perfect to take Fido for a day of exploring and running around off leash. The field is open with tons of grass, and features plenty of unmarked trails for you and Fido to explore. You can feel safe here with your pup since no vehicles are allowed to travel on it, and Fido can safety walk around with you off-leash. Wright's Field is relatively unknown except to locals, so you both can have a quiet hike with not too many people or dogs bothering you while you explore. Make sure to bring plenty of water for you pup since there are no trees for shade and no running water in the field.

Indian Springs

Twenty miles out in Jamul is Hollenback Canyon, home to numerous trails with different difficulties depending on the trail. The main trail, Hollenbeck Canyon Trail, provides plenty of shade from all the trees and occasionally come provides a bench to rest on. During certain seasons, there is a waterfall and small lake that you and Fido can jump into to cool down while you are hiking. Your dog can roam around the trails off leash if you like, but make sure to bring water with you since there isn't any available in the canyon.

Pine Ridge

The Pioneer Mail Trail is eighteen miles out of Descanso in Julian, and a great spot to hike with your furry friend. The trail is a simple 1.75-miles through the Cleveland National Forest, and will give you a stunning view of the mountains that surround the area. The hike will be steep, around 3000-feet in elevation, so make sure to take it slow and easy for your pup. Don't forget to bring water for you and Fido while you hike, and be prepared since there aren't many trees on the hike and it can get a little hot. Your dog will be tuckered out on his way home after a great hike.

Blossom Valley

When hunger strikes, stop into El Cajon, just fourteen miles out of Descanso, to grab a bite to eat at Soy Leaf Garden Cafe. This pawsome eatery serves organic plant based food that includes deli wraps, salads, and baked goods. Their restaurant looks like a cute little train which will be a great backdrop for a photo with your pup. They have an outdoor patio which is dog friendly, and welcomes Fido to join you for a tasty meal before the two of you head home. Trust us, you will be feeling full and satisfied when you leave this dogtastic restaurant.
