I just moved to San Diego from Connecticut, and was looking for for a good way to meet new dogs and explore the area. I’ve had 8 dogs throughout my life, from Rottweiler to Golden Retriever to Shih Tzu, and I used to volunteer at an animal shelter in Connecticut. I’ve been walking dogs for as long as I have been walking myself, and they are by far my favorite creatures!

As a far northeast suburb of San Diego, the city of Santee is a pawtastic place for dogs and their owners. Three of the nine community parks allow off-leash exercise for dogs at designated times. With four trails, you and Fido will have a range of options when you want to get out and explore nature together. If you're in need of professional services for your furry friend, there are four veterinary clinics in town.
One park in the area that has an off-leash section for dogs is Mast Park on Carlton Hills Blvd. There's a fenced space that's open from dawn until dusk for your furry pal to romp and play with others. If you take advantage of the trails in the rest of this facility, your pup needs to be on a leash that's no longer than six feet.
If you want to go for a hike or jog with your pup through a furiffic greenway, take him to the Walker Preserve Trail. This pathway has a staging area off Magnolia Avenue that includes a picnic tables, waste stations, and drinking fountains for people and dogs.
Go hiking in the mountains with your canine companion by heading to the Cowles Mountain Trailhead off Mesa Road. This popular out-and-back trail is 2.9 miles long. Dogs are welcome to accompany you, but you need to keep them on a leash and pick up any droppings. Remember to bring water for you and your pup.
Whether you're living in Santee or just visiting with your dog, you'll have access to some puptacular outdoor opportunities here!
Mission View Estates, located in the southwest part of Santee, is a residential area that borders Mission Trails Regional Park. You and Fido can enjoy peaceful walks through this neighborhood. When you want to treat your pup to some off-leash time, head to Big Rock Park. This facility allows dogs to run freely in the designated field every Monday through Friday from dawn until 9 am. Outside of the specified times and space, your pal is allowed to join you in the park and on the trails as long as he's on a leash. Remember to bring waste bags so that you can clean up any messes.
In West Hills, dogs and their owners can walk through the neigborhood along quiet sidewalks. This area is largely residential and includes a few community parks and two schools. For a pawtastic outdoor adventure, take your pooch camping at Kumeyaay Lake Campground located in Mission Trails Regional Park just two miles west of here. Go hiking on the trails or do some fishing from the shore of the lake at this facility. For a minimal fee, dogs are permitted in the campground and on trails here. Make sure your canine pal has a current license and is kept on a leash no longer than eight feet long. You're responsible for cleaning up your pup's waste.
Woodglen Vista is a residential neighborhood in the northern part of Santee. Here, you can go walking down streets lined with single-family homes or take your pup to Woodglen Vista Park. This community facility includes a fenced off-leash play area for dogs. Let your furry pal socialize with other canines in the grassy field. There are some shade trees and a shelter along the edges of this enclosure. You can also leash up and stroll on the trails in the rest of the park. Bring something to grill and have a picnic with your special buddy. Remember to bring some waste bags so that you can clean up after your pooch.
Sky Ranch is a residential development located near the Rattlesnake Mountain Preserve. This peaceful neighborhood includes a community park and is surrounded by open spaces. Head to Sky Ranch Park on Cala Lily Street to enjoy a picnic with your furry friend. There are barbecue grills, tables, and a field here. Stroll on the pathway around the park and admire the beautiful scenery. Dogs are permitted to join you in this public park as long as they're under your control and on a leash that's no longer than six feet. Don't fur-get to bring some water and waste bags along to keep the park as clean as you found it.
Riverwalk, located just north of the San Diego River, is a mixed zone area with residential streets where you and Fido can go for a stroll. There's a furiffic park here for you and your pal to explore. Head to Town Center Community Park and take advantage of the walking trails that wind around the athletic fields. Grab a bite at the concession stand and enjoy a little picnic with your four-footed friend at one of the tables. Dogs can join you in this public facility as long as they're on a leash that's up to six feet long and you clean up their messes.
