Casa de Oro Mount Helix is a village in southern California, located just 13 miles west of San Diego. This area features many hills, mountains, and canyons, along with a hot, dry climate. This lovely combination of nature and nice weather makes Casa de Oro Mount Helix a great place to enjoy the outdoors with your pup! There are even two veterinary clinics here, making pet care a breeze. 

Mount Helix is considered the crown jewel East County and is right within town! This 1370 foot mountain peak offers sweeping views of San Diego and many great opportunities to get some fresh air and exercise. Your doggo doesn’t need to miss out on the fun, because leashed dogs are welcome! You can take a stroll along the Yawkey Trail, semi-circle trail around the park. This trail features benches and view maps where you can learn about the nearby mountains and hills, and flora and fauna. 

This village also has its share of smaller urban parks spread throughout town! A very pawpular park for dog walkers is the Deputy Lonny G Brewer County Park. This park is located in the southeast corner of town. The sprawling park is fairly undeveloped and is known by locals as an unofficial dog park. Your pooch will love to romp around and meet some furry friends here! Dogs are welcome as long as they get picked up after.

There are horseshoe pits and a playground for some fun and games. There is also plenty of large grassy areas under the tall eucalyptus trees that your pup will love to sniff and play on. Why not pack a lunch and stay for the day? In this park, you can find grills, picnic tables and a pavilion that is great for gatherings with friends or family. Amenities include restrooms as well. Dogs are welcome of course, as long as they stay leashed and get picked up after.

    In the neighboring town of La Mesa, you can find another puppy paradise! The Grossmont Terrace neighborhood is the proud home to the Harry Griffen Park and Canine Corners Dog Park, just a 5-minute drive from Casa de Oro Mount Helix. The dog park features three large fenced off areas, so dogs of all shapes and sizes can have a safe place to play and make friends. Amenities include water buckets, pooper scoopers, trash cans, and balls to chase. All you need to bring is your playful pup! Leashed dogs are allowed to explore the surrounding Harry Griffen Park as well. This park features a jogging trail that’s easy on the paws and the eyes. There are also picnic areas, playgrounds, and plenty of greenspaces to feast your eyes on.

    East of Casa de Oro Mount Helix, just a hop across the border into the Rancho San Diego Town Center, you can find the furtastic Damon Lane County Park. This park is under a 10-minute drive from Casa de Oro Mount Helix and is a great place to escape into nature! Here you can find 29 acres of thick forest groves, open grassy areas, and a creek. There are nature trails that wind through the park that attract joggers, nature enthusiasts, and dog walkers. At the top of the hill, you can catch great views of Rancho San Diego. Leashed dogs are welcome! After working up an appetite, head over to the Chipotle Mexican Grill in the same neighborhood. This restaurant is known for its burritos and taco bowls, and has six outdoor dog-friendly tables.

    In the La Mesa West neighborhood of La Mesa, just 10 minutes from Casa de Oro Mount Helix, you can find another woofderful gem, the Mission Trails Regional Park Murray Lake. Here you and your pupper can enjoy the many hiking trails, and even take a stroll around the peaceful lake. Your dog will love the squirrel and duck watching! Along with the trails, there is also a 1.5-mile paved road to walk along. Leashed dogs are welcome, but don’t forget the waste bags, and plenty of water to drink for you and your parched pup! There are outhouses on site as well. When your stomach is growling, head over to the Lake Murray Cafe right nearby. This cafe has dog-friendly outdoor seating so that you can dig into some hearty American food next to your canine companion.

    In the nearby town of Rancho San Diego, you can find the San Diego National Wildlife Refuge. This wildlife refuge can be accessed from the Jamacha Junction neighborhood, about 10 minutes away from Casa de Oro Mount Helix. When you and your pooch are just itching to get into the great outdoors, this is the place to go! The refuge comprises of 11,152 acres of rolling grasslands, canyons, mountains and forests. The Sweetwater River Trail is a favorite place to take a hike, featuring a bridge over Steele Canyon Creek and many wildflowers in the spring. Dogs are welcome, but they must stay leashed. This policy also helps protect your curious puppy from rattlesnakes. Don’t forget the drinking water and dog treats for your good boy or girl!
