Sandy Creek State Forest
Sandy Creek may not be filled with dog-friendly attractions, but pups who love the great outdoors will go mutts for the Sandy Creek State Forest on the southern end of the town. The park has over 500 acres of space dedicated to activities like fishing, hiking, camping, and checking out the local wildlife. Sandy Creek State Forest has a wide array of trees and pretty features to spot as you walk, and the trails through the forest aren’t designated trails, so your adventurous pooch will enjoy some creative exploration along the way. He can even take a splash in Deer Creek, which runs through the park.

Chateaugay State Forest
Straight south of Sandy Creek State Forest is Richland, NY. On the town’s west end is the Chateaugay State Forest, which is about 11 miles from Sandy Creek. This spot is known for its many designated trails that give less adventurous pups some clear-cut paths to walk with their owners. There are several trails marked as “easy,” like Trail 4 and Trail 5, so you and your dog can take a relaxing stroll together. The park is only a few miles away from the Salmon River Reservoir, which has several access points in its neighboring towns for people (and pups!) to fish, wade, and swim.

Selkirk Shores State Park
Head about 10 miles from Sandy Creek to Pulaski, where you’ll find the Selkirk Shores State Park. For water-loving hounds, this is a must-see area of New York nestled along Lake Ontario and next to the Salmon River. The park offers tons to do with your leashed pup, from hiking and fishing to picnicking and camping. It’s even a pawtastic spot in the winter for outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy snowmobiling and skiing. The campgrounds here overlook the gorgeous lake, and you can bring your boat to explore on the water. This park even has a swimming beach on which leashed dogs are allowed.

If you’re in the mood for some city fun with your pup, you can head to Syracuse, which is about 45 miles from Sandy Creek. The Downtown area has just about every type of restaurant you could ask for and houses museums, civic centers, shopping areas, and more. The Onondaga Lake Park is one of the most-visited places in New York. Your pup will love the Wegmans Good Dog Park inside, which has separate small and large dog areas and lots of space filled with toys and agility equipment for your pup. The park itself has picnic tables and open space for leashed dogs to enjoy and explore.
