Goose, Carol Danvers’ feline companion, captured the hearts of countless fans worldwide even before Captain Marvel hit theaters. In the months leading up to the premiere, the orange tabby was present in the film’s marketing and promotions—getting her own poster, appearing in the trailer, and starring in an hour-long livestream on press day.
But as fans who have read the comics already know, Goose is not actually a cat, but a Flerken. Flerkens are highly intelligent aliens that have the ability to shapeshift, shoot tentacles from their mouths, and hold pocket dimensions in their bodies. Goose’s true nature wasn’t revealed until later in the film, although Skrull general Talos mentions early on that she’s not really a cat. Goose eventually demonstrates her Flerken powers when she unleashes her mouth tentacles to swallow the Tesseract for safekeeping and then destroy a bunch of Kree soldiers.
Despite appearing in only one movie so far, Goose plays a significant role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After all, she did protect a very important Infinity Stone, and it turns out that she was the one who scratched out Nick Fury’s left eye, hence also being responsible for his iconic eyepatch.
Goose isn’t a common name for cats, so how did the four-legged character get her name? It’s a Top Gun reference, chosen by the film’s directors to better tie her to Carol’s past as an Air Force pilot. In the comics, Goose is named Chewie, after the Star Wars character Chewbacca. Whether she’s called Goose or Chewie, this is one feline (or Flerken) that fans hope to see more of!Cat Names That Start With G Considerations
When deciding on a name that starts with G, consider your new cat’s personality. So don’t worry if you haven’t picked one prior to their arrival—you now have a chance to get to know them first! How about Gremlin for a playful kitty, or Galen for a calm feline? You can also take inspiration from their appearance. For example, Garbanzo would suit a wee cat, while Gaenor would be a good choice for a white one.
Take your time when choosing a name for your feline friend. After all, you’re likely going to use it for the next 10 years or so. Moreover, go with something that’s short and easy to pronounce. A complicated name might confuse your cat and cause them to never learn it properly. You want your cat to recognize and respond to their own name. Above all, choose something that you like!
