West Atchison

In West Atchison, neighbors welcome four-legged residents! Just off Laramie Street, registered members can take advantage of the Fetch & Stretch Dog Park. There is a one-time membership cost of $10, plus $2.50 for each additional dog. Smaller dogs can enjoy safe playtime with a separate fenced-in area. All pups in the park have access to ramps, tire climbs, fire hydrants, and water stations. For a more one-on-one experience with your pets, you can check out the walking trail in the park. Or, head a few blocks down to the Reisner Park. Sparky must remain on a leash, but they're sure to enjoy the neighborhood park.

Xavier

Follow the Missouri River south about 25 miles and you’ll find the city of Leavenworth, Kansas. Xavier, a small religious neighborhood in the southern end of the city, is home to community rich with principles and values -- pawfect for a family looking to settle down with fur-kids (or human kids!). Sparky and friends will especially love the Waggin’ Tails Dog Park within walking distance. Here, they’ll have six acres of off-leash park to enjoy, separated into three sections. After you work up an appetite, grab a bite on the pet-friendly patio of the Metropolitan Steakhouse. Be prepared for some doggie drool!

Weston Bend State Park

On the namesake side of the Missouri River, about 30-minutes south of Atchison, Kansas, is the Weston Bend State Park. Here, you and your best furry friend can explore the grounds and experience nature at its finest. Stick to marked trails, like the Bear Creek Trail or the Missouri River Trail for scenic views of the surrounding areas. Or, get adventurous and explore unmarked trails scattered throughout Weston Bend. There’s also a 1.75-acre dog run complete with all the amenities, including separate sections for large and small dogs. This state park is an all-inclusive destination for you and your canine!

Pomeroy

Just below the bend of the Missouri River is the small neighborhood of Pomeroy, KS. This village has been around since the late 1800s, and its close proximity to the Wyandotte County Lake makes it an excellent destination. For the outdoorsy person and their pup, Pomeroy is heaven! Within walking distance from the center of the little village is a myriad of nature paths and trails that you can explore. On the other side of the lake is the Leash Free Dog Run. This open space has no fences or real markers, but it is a great spot for hot summer days, since Sparky is welcome in the water.

North Lawrence

Welcome to North Lawrence, Kansas! About an hour out from Atchison, this neighborhood is aptly named for its location in the northern end of Lawrence. Plus, it happily welcomes dog-owners and their four-legged friends! In this neighborhood, you’ll find beautiful views of the Kansas River sandwiched between two parks on either side: Burcham Park and Riverfront Park. The latter actually falls in North Lawrence, and even has an off-leash dog park where Sparky can socialize and get some much-needed exercise. Lyons Park is a public park also located in Lawrence, but pets will need to remain leashed at all times when visiting.
